When teaching potential entrepreneurs on how to write proposals, I usually find that they\’re confident in their area of expertise, but don\’t know how to make the presentation to a client. One of the problems is that they\’re not thinking from the client\’s point of view but from their own. I stress that they must first understand what the client needs, and then how they can meet those needs. So I take them through a format.

When I talk about format I\’m not referring to the kind of Request for Proposal (RFP) that deals with supplying a product at a price, such as a quote for roofing material. I\’m talking about the consulting kind of proposal-you could be an architect, an engineer, a consultant in several different fields such as training, corporate reorganization and sales.

Why is a format so useful and important? It guides you through the areas you need to cover. You don\’t miss anything out. What follows are the important sections of that format.

The format begins where it must with understanding the client\’s current situation and what the desired situation happens to be. That can mean carrying out key research, conducting client interviews, doing market analysis in order to understand the situation. Your expertise comes later. This section should clearly convey that:

* you understand the client\’s current situation;
\r * you understand what the client wants to achieve; and most importantly,
\r * the client recognizes that you understand the situation and what is needed.

I can\’t stress this last point enough. It\’s not sufficient for you to appreciate the client\’s current and desired situation. The client must also be confident of your understanding so that they trust you.

The second section of the format deals with how you plan to take the client from the present situation to the desired one. In other words, what\’s your solution? This is where your particular expertise comes into play.

The third section of the format goes into why you, your company, your sub-contractors, your track record should make you the client\’s first choice. This is also the place for \”inclusion.\” By inclusion I mean your willingness to work closely, as appropriate, with client staff, client customers and even other client suppliers. This is especially important if it makes the desired situation come about more easily and effectively.

The fourth segment of the format deals with your budget for the project and the logistics involved, such as timelines, payment schedules and travel arrangements.

The final section of the format is the wrap - a summary of your understanding of the project and how you will execute it. This is the section, usually up front, that the client turns to first, before proceeding to the detail.

In closing, I recommend that you use a mind map, on your own or with a team, to help you flush out this format, both by section and within each section. Using a mind map and following a format will help you create and write a more effective proposal.

Presentation Skills

For many people the mere thought of giving a presentation fills them with fear. This article sets out some hints and tips to make it a success.

Planning

It seems really obvious when someone says you need to plan your presentation. Often however this is an area that is skimmed over.\r How long?\r As a general rule, I suggest that you take the time allocated for the presentation time and multiply it by 3 to give you an indicative time for your planning.

Structure

If you are going to get your message across you need structure. One of the best tips I ever received was to think of the presentation like a newspaper article. You have:

A headline

Two or three messages

Slides

Many of us will have heard the term death by power point. Presenters can often:

Have too many slides

Have too much content on the slides

Use too many graphics

Again, as rule of thumb, if you are doing a presentation lasting 10-15 minutes you are unlikely to need more than 6 slides.

Practice

No matter how many times you have delivered a presentation you need to practice you presentation in advance. Start with standing in front of a mirror. Then move on to practising in front of your family or partner. Then colleagues and friends. Try to do at least 3 practice runs.

Feedback

Ask and listen carefully to the feedback you are receiving about the structure, slides and delivery. See this as an opportunity to turn a good presentation into a great presentation.

Delivering Presentation

For many, this is the part they dread. Here are a few tips to ensure things go smoothly.

Check the equipment in advance

Make sure you know how to load the presentation

Take a few minutes to relax yourself before you start

Dont worry about memorising the words, just remember your headline and key messages

Pace yourself

Try not to be too serious

Have fun

Most people who love cruise vacations might also fantasize about going to the idyllic island paradise - miles and miles of gorgeous white sandy beaches, turquoise blue waters, lots of sun, lush tropical forests .. and with hardly a soul on the island.

But is that what happens when you go on an island cruise vacation on a gigantic modern cruise liner? Sure, the island may be a paradise - great beaches, bluish green waters, hardly any inhabitants, tropical forests and all. But what happens when the ship gets to the island?

Whoa! A hungry horde of thousands of tourists from the cruise liner descend on the island in no time … and wherever you look, all you see are tourists and not the gorgeous beaches.

Then you start wondering if this is the vacation experience you were so excited about.

But it does not have to be that way. You see, it is not only cruise liners that go to island ports - commercial freighters do too. These ships sail to some gorgeous islands and dock at ports cruise liners do not . The result is that the port is not deluged by tourists and you may get to see the place in all its natural beauty - the way it actually is everyday.

And it is becoming increasingly popular for vacationers to travel on board these freighters and get to places that are not on the itineraries of cruise liners.

The accommodation on board may be comfortable, but you would not want to compare it with what would be available on board a luxury cruise liner. And you might get to see stuff like cargo being loaded and unloaded and the other activities that occur on board a freighter. In essence, you will be sharing the ship not with thousands of other vacationers, but with tonnes of cargo, possibly a handful of other tourists and sailors.

If you do not mind foregoing all the attractions on board a modern cruise ship and if you will not miss the elaborate buffets and dinners, then traveling aboard a freight cruise ship may be one option you might want to explore.

Have you been to the heartbreakingly beautiful Paradise Cove on Grand Bahama ?

Imagine yourself speaking with passion and authenticity. Your thoughts turn into dynamic and memorable words, expressed fluidly, with confidence and presence. How does this happen?

Three steps will turn this image into reality for your next speaking opportunity.

Step One: Crafting Your Speaking Content

If you are using slides:

For each slide, write down these four things

1) Attention-getting opening statement (not the slide title)

2) 2-3 key points

3) Story or experience that illustrates your key points

4) Benefit or value statement why should the audience care?

If you are not using slides, create an outline including

1) Attention-getting opening

2) Key Points

3) Stories

4) Closing and call-to-action

Techniques to help you include:

  • Short phrases
  • Active voice
  • Replace the words and, but, however with periods. Short sentences are easier to hear.

Step Two: Create your Notes and Practice Your Speech

Notes should build on your crafted speaking content. They are short and succinct. Notes are not full sentences, scripts, essays, scholarly or literary works.

Once youve crafted your content on your computer, take the time to handwrite your thoughts onto paper or index cards. This helps you remember what you want to say. Try this and experience the difference before you skip this step!

Techniques to help you include:

  • Practice with your handwritten notes. Hold them in your hands and speak out loud.
  • Listen to yourself
  • Repeat small sections 3-4 times until they sound right.

Step Three: Alleviate nervousness with rehearsals. Rehearsing is different from practicing.

To rehearse, set up a room as close as possible to the way the real venue will be set up. Even if this is hard to do, the effort will pay substantial dividends.

Speak straight through your content. Imagine the audience in the room with you. This means selecting objects to make eye contact with, moving around the space, and resisting the temptation to repeat parts or correct mistakes.

Once youve spoken straight through, you can go back to any sticky parts, practice them 3-4 times, then start from the beginning again and go straight through.

Techniques to help you:

  • If you get stuck someplace, pause, breathe and pick up again at that spot. It does not help to go back to the beginning.
  • Trust yourself to say what you need to say.

The audience wont know what you planned to say, so keep going even if you forget something. A confident delivery is more important than speaking any particular word or sentence.

As one client wrote to me: As a perfectionist, I continued to get stuck because the speech was never good enough. Thanks, Susan, for walking me through a process that I once dreaded. Your insights helped me gain the confidence to break through my speaking barriers.

If the chest x-ray is suggestive of malignant mesothelioma, it is likely that further investigations will be ordered, especially if compensation may be sought.

These investigations may include additional imaging studies, blood tests, bone scans, and lung-function tests, as well as more invasive procedures such as thoracentesis, thoracoscopy, pleuroscopy or a lung biopsy. This is a typical mesothelioma diagnosis

Mesothelioma diagnosis can be done through chest x-ray. The typical abnormalities seen on chest x-ray in patients with malignant mesohtelioma are pleural effusion (a collection of fluid in the space between the 2 layers of the pleura), or it is called pleural thickening.

Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking Malignancies involving mesothelial cells in these spread cavities are known as malignant mesothelioma, which may be localized or diffuse. Mesothelioma is the word used to describe a cancerous tumor that involves the mesothelial cells of an organ, often the lungs, heart, or abdominal organs.

Mesothelioma diagnosis in this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers transcendently of the spread\’s internal organs. Greatest malignant mesothelioma set up complex karyotypes, with extensive aneuploidy and rearrangement of tons chromosomes.

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma diagnosis is often difficult, because the symptoms are similar to those of a number of other conditions. A history of exposure to asbestos may increase clinical suspicion for mesothelioma.

A physical examination is performed, followed by chest X-ray and often lung function tests. The X-ray may reveal pleural thickening commonly seen after asbestos exposure if mesothelioma diagnosis is done.

If the cancer has length beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the size, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or engage.\r Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and suffering due to ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity).

Exposure to airborne asbestos particles increases one\’s risk of developing malignant mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma has a peak incidence 35-45 years after asbestos exposure. Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer in which malignant cells are found in the sac lining the chest or abdomen. Most people with malignant mesothelioma have on worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos.

It can also occur in children; however, these cases are not thought to be associated with asbestos exposure.

Most people who develop mesothelioma get worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fiber in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement products.

Treatment options a mesothelioma diagnosis for the management of malignant mesothelioma includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and multimodality treatment. Surgery in victims with disease confined to the pleural space is reasonable.

Extrapleural pneumonectomy is a more extensive procedure and has a higher mortality rate. Recently, the mortality rate has been lowered to 3.8%. It involves dissection of the parietal pleura; division of the pulmonary vessels; and en bloc resection of the lung, pleura, pericardium, and diaphragm followed by reconstruction. It provides the greatest local control because it removes the entire pleural sac along with the lung parenchyma.

The 2 surgical procedures used are pleurectomy with decortication and extrapleural pneumonectomy.

Surgical resection has been relied upon because radiation and chemotherapy get hold of been ineffective unequivocal treatments. There are now a number of cancer treatment options open to mesothelioma patients. Extrapleural pneumonectomy for selected victims with very early stage disease may expand recurrence-free survival, but the impact it has on overall survival is unknown at this time.

Mesothelioma diagnosis can be intimidating and can scare a lot of people, but mesothelioma diagnosis may give you a fighting chance if can be diagnose early. So do yourself a favor if you think that what you are suffering from and had worked in an asbestos related workplace.

The purpose of such investigations in mesothelioma diagnosis is to confirm and to determine the type of mesothelioma, to \’stage\’ the disease (measure how severe it is), and so to assess whether the disease is operable.

Been working on your website? I hope so. This powerful information I\’m giving you will only be useful if you\’re applying it to your website. Don\’t make the mistake of 90% of people out there trying to make money online but failing to do so.

The methods I\’m teaching you work! I\’ve used them with countless clients across many different industries. And, time and time again, they worked! These methods got websites ranking on the first pages of the search engine results.

Don\’t you want to be there too?

Check out this free tool from Yahoo. Yahoo has one of the best free keyword tools available for conducting keyword research. Search for this phrase: overture inventory tool. You should be able to find it quite easily.

It is such a popular tool that occasionally the Yahoo keyword server can\’t handle all the requests. So if you load the page and get an error message, simply hit refresh on your browser until you get to the keyword selector tool.

Now enter one of your keyword terms in the box and hit the blue triangle key. After a brief time, you\’ll be presented with a list of similar keywords and the number of times that keyword phrase was searched for during a specified period of time.

If you combine this info with a manual search on the search engines, you get a pretty good idea what your competition looks like for any given keyword phrase. Start with the less competitive keywords and, as your website builds in popularity, move on to the more competitive phrases.\r What do you do with this information? When developing the content of your website, you want to focus each page around two or three different keyword phrases. Simply pick the most popular keyword phrase that fits your website\’s purpose. Then, as you compose the text of your web pages, include those phrases naturally throughout your content.

The most crucial places to include these keyword phrases are in the title of the web page in the headings (h1, h2, etc), and in the regular content. It\’s good to make the keyword phrases bold when they appear in the content. Also, when you create your links from page to page, make sure you the link text is one of your keyword phrases as well.

Don\’t simply repeat the phrase over and over. Google will actually penalize you for such repetition. Include the phrase as smoothly and naturally as possible throughout the page.

Good luck, and keep at it!

Are you looking for a safe and have no idea where to start? This article will certainly help you. First, let me give you the best tip you\’ll ever read about purchasing a safe: Do NOT go out and randomly purchase a safe from some sell-all store unless you literally just want a box that locks. You need to talk to someone who is knowledgeable in this area and I\’m guessing youre not an expert on safes, so youll definitely want to go somewhere that has security professionals with the knowledge to give you the advice you need to hear.

Where can I find security professionals?

The easiest way to figure out which safe you need is to find a professional website that specializes in selling safes. Now, when I say specializes in selling safes I dont mean Home Depot or anything like that, Im talking about a site that specializes in selling only security products. When you find a site like that, theyll obviously know quite a bit more than your average sell-all site, and Id trust the information I receive from them instead of from the minimum wage teenager (I apologize to all the minimum wage teenagers who are safe experts). Take a look around their site and ask them a few questions to figure out which safe is for your needs.

The best way is to have a safe dealer that happens to be local to you (professional locksmith shops may be your best bet to find one of these). Try going to maps.google.com and typing in safes near your_city (without the quotes and replacing your_city with the actual city you live in. I know youre not stupid, but some people are).

What kind of questions do I ask?

Well, what do you want a safe for? Do you want a safe to keep jewelry in? Guns? Important documents? Computer media? Cash? Your Pokemon collection? First thing to know is that there are a lot of different types of safes out there. If you get a fire protected safe for your important documents, it may end up destroying the computer media that you store in there. You didn\’t know that and could have made a big mistake, but a safe professional will know.

Just explain to them what your situation is, what kind of things you want to protect and where you want to put the safe. If you have dimensions of where you want to place the safe, thats great.

How much should I expect to pay?

With quality safes, youre going to be spending a good amount of money. I know that Cheap-o CP583 safe looks like itll do what you want, but you may end up losing a lot of money or sanity if something happens to the safe. Just remember why youre buying a safe in the first place. Whats the point of buying a safe if it doesnt properly protect your valuables?

I have such fond memories of my grandmothers stories to me. She loved to share about life when she was growing up. She had many brothers and sisters, some who lived long lives and some whose lives were cut short.

Whenever we would go through photos, my grandmother always knew who was who and had a story she could share about them.

Technology today is wonderful. Those old photos can be reproduced and enjoyed for many more years to come. Some of my grandmothers photos were torn, yellowed and falling apart. However any film developer can reproduce new, clean copies and can even remove the discolorations that come with time.

I cant stress enough to ask questions of those of older generations. I loved to sit and ask my grandmother questions about her growing up years. My own grandmother was born in 1898, so times were very different. She truly enjoyed sharing about being a young child, when she was dating my grandfather and even giving birth to her 3 children.

If your relatives are still alive, ask if you can make copies of things like birth certificates and marriage certificates. If your relatives are deceased write to the hall of records and see if you can get copies of these items. The further back you go, the more difficult it is to obtain these items.

My grandmother was actually born here in the U.S. She was born in Chicago. So I did some research to find out what Chicago was like in 1898. I was able to add this information to the scrapbook about my grandmother.

I know I am not the only one with recipes from my grandmother. She passed down many recipes to my mother, who in turn passed them down to me. These recipes make a wonderful addition to this heritage scrapbook.

I have found many heritage scrapbook kits, stickers and paper to aid in creating this very special scrapbook.

While some of your time might be spent on research, this scrapbook will become one of your most treasured books.
