Ten Steps to Being a Professional Auctioneer

Monday, June 30th, 2008

As an auctioneer, you are paid in direct proportion to your ability to communicate with people. The lack of this ability can destroy you as an auctioneer. Here are some steps to professionalism Id like to share with you. Follow them and you will be able to go as far and as fast in the auction business as
you want to.

1. Professional auctioneers keep their attitude positive when all the world crumbles around them. A little bit of the world crumbles around all of us at times, so we must learn to anticipate it. Its something that cant be avoided, so be ready to handle the crises when they occur, If you allow them to get you down, you wont be ready for the next positive thing that happens to you and you just might miss a fantastic auction opportunity.

2. Professional auctioneers have a look about them. They dont act like a clown. Draw a picture in your mind of what a professional auctioneer looks like, envision every detail from the hair style down to the shoes. Hopefully, your vision of a professional entails someone who stands out as being sharp and conscientious about the impression they leave with others. This same professional should portray a feeling of trust and knowledge of the auction profession just through his or her actions and the way they carry themselves. Look at yourself in a mirror. Do any of the details in your picture fit you? If not, maybe its time to make some changes. Start with minor changes and watch yourself grow into that professional image you have in mind.

3. Customers and clients relate business success with competence. Professional auctioneers surround themselves with images of success. Does your car, truck, briefcase, desk and office communicate a successful auctioneer career? We all want the best for ourselves. People love to do business with people who are the best at what they do.

4. Organization is an important image to clients. This means being on time, having ready answers, handling details, calling back when you say you will, and diligent follow up. Do what you say you are going to do when you say you are going to. All these things tell people that you are a person worthy of their confidence. (It would go like this if someone were asked to describe your general characteristics) Mr/Ms. is a person of great integrity, scrupulous in discharge of commitments, and a high sense of ethical responsibility. He/she is a credit to the profession in both attributes of character and knowledgability.

5. Talk like a professional auctioneer. Avoid nonsense talk at all costs. Ask questions about your clients and how you can help. You must show an interest in them and in their needs to get them to open up to you. Choose your words carefully so as not to offend. Plan your auction presentation from your prospects point of view.

6. Stay in tune. The auction profession is constantly changing. Youll see the less competent people leaving the business every week, Devote some time to learning of new developments in the field. (ATTEND YOUR STATE AUCTIONEER CONVENTION EVERY YEAR. IF YOU HAVE AUCTIONS, THE CONVENTION NEEDS YOU, IF YOU ARE NOT HAVING ANY AUCTIONS, YOU NEED THE CONVENTION) the world is moving too fast and it is a lot of fun to move with it. Everyone wins when the team gets stronger.

7. Respect your fellow auctioneers. Others in the auction business have the same challenges you have. They deserve the same credit and recognition when they succeed and the same help and encouragement when they fail.

8. Remember family and friends. They want and need a high quality relationship. Be sure to plan time for family and social needs. Someday Ill spend time with my family. Someday never comes. It will help you gain their understanding when business takes you away evenings and weekends.

9. Get out and see the people. There are literally thousands of people in your area who need and deserve professional assistance with their auction needs. If you dont get out and bang on some doors and take it to them, they might be short changed. The more you get out and meet the people, the more people you can serve.

10. Keep your integrity intact. Almost every day an opportunity to take unfair advantage of someone arises. A professional knows that a dissatisfied customer today will cost him or her several possible auctions in the future, A professional auctioneer knows how important selling with the facts is. Stretching the truth, omitting information and avoiding present problems by stalling or blaming someone else is for amateurs. Sell with the facts and you only have to sell them once to be a winner.

If you use these ten steps as a guideline, when someone asks what do you do for a living, YOU CAN STAND TALL AND SAY; I AM A PROFESSIONAL AUCTIONEER.
Success to you and have a great bunch of auctions.

9 Sure Fire Ways To Build An Optin List Fast

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Building a prospect, subscriber or client list - quickly -
is a rewarding experience. Since August, 2001, I’ve built
lists that range from a few hundred highly targeted
prospects - to lists of over 280,000 subscribers. In this
article, you’ll discover the secrets I’ve used to quickly
build targeted, effective lists. At the end, you’ll get a
glimpse of an actual case study.

The basic principles of list building are pretty straight
forward.

- You need something of value to offer your prospects and
give them a reason to sign up to your list.

- You need to set up a form to capture your prospects
contact details and connect it to your autoresponder

- You need visitors to come to your website (Develop
traffic)

Basic Principle 1

Starting with the first basic principle, you need something
of value to offer your potential prospects.

You can offer

1. A newsletter
2. A product
3. A service
4. A special offer

Basic Principle 2

The second basic principle is setting up your lead capture
form. This is the box (form) on your website that your
prospects fill in with their contact details. As soon as
they press the send button, your autoresponder adds them to
your database and sends them your message. Presto, you’re
starting to build your list.

Most autoresponders give you the HTML code for your form,
so you don’t have to worry about any special programming.
All you have to do is cut and paste.

The details you can comfortably collect from a prospect
depends on your offer. If you’re offering an online
newsletter, you only need your prospect’s first name and
email address. If you’re sending them a CD by snail mail,
you can collect their postal address even phone and fax
numbers.

Quick Note:

You’ll increase your response rate if you include the sign
up form at the top and bottom of your webpage as well as
use a popup / popunder or slide in box.

Once you’ve got the ground work done, you’re ready to start
driving traffic to your website.

Basic Principle 3

Building your list is like building a city. You want to get
as many people into your city as possible, so you need to
build roads. You need an 8 lane highway and multiple
smaller roads to fill your city with people.

In list building terms, you need to focus on one main
technique to pull prospects into your list. You also want
to use secondary techniques to add to the momentum of your
traffic. The following list gives you the exact methods I
use to develop my lists. Choose one method as your main
focus and use the rest as your secondary traffic sources.

1. Advertise in print

Place advertising whereever your market is. Ask yourself
what you read personally, where do you get information?
Your market most likely does the same as you, so get in
front of them by using classified or display advertising
in:

a. magazines
b. trade journals
c. newspapers
d. direct mail

2. Advertise online

This is the least costly method of advertising. You can
reach a targeted audience through advertising in ezines,
online newsletters or pay per click services like Google
AdWords .

3. Write articles

Writing articles gives you credibility. Write articles on a
regular basis and submit them to online and offline sources.
You should be submitting articles to the same sources you’re
advertising with as well as all other publications you can
find in your market. Do a search on Google or your
favourite search engine for the keyword “ezine directories”
and you’ll find lists of potential places for your articles
and advertising.

4. Affiliate Program

One of the fastest ways to build your list exponentially is
to set up an affiliate program. Your affiliates will link to
your website, which means plenty of targeted traffic. This
helps your search engine rankings, which brings you more
traffic, which increases the number of affiliates you get
and helps you build your list at break neck speed. It’s a
never-ending cycle.

5. Forums

Get involved in forums. When you post or answer a question
in a forum, you’re generally allowed to have a signature
file attached to your post. It’s just like the signature
file in your email. Your signature file should direct
people to your website where they can sign up for your
list.

6. Email signature file

The same as in forums, every email you send out should have
a signature file directing people to your website.

7. Joint Ventures

If you’ve got a unique, original product, a joint venture
may be an option for you. Contact some entrepreneurs who
have large lists and see if they’re interested in working
with you.

8. Referrals

This is very powerful. Include a referral or “tell a
frien’d” form on your website. This little form can help
build your list exponentially. When someone recommends your
site to a frien’d, that frien’d is most likely going to visit
and possibly tell another frien’d. And the snowball starts
rolling. Add this technique with an affiliate program and
you’ll soon have a nice fat, targeted list of prospects.

9. buy opt-in subscriptions

If you want to build a big list really fast, you can bu’y
opt-in subscribers for as low as a penny each from
http://www.pennyperlead.com. These leads have raised their
hand and said yes I’m interested in receiving business
opportunit’y information. They’ve filled out a form and you
can contact them with your offers.

The upside of this process is you build a big list fast.

The downside is your list will be less responsive than one
you build on your own. It takes some time to cultivate a
relationship with these new subscribers, but if you send
them quality information, you can convert the list into an
asset for your business.

Regardless how you decide to build your list, the important
thing is…you build it. It will be your online company’s
biggest asset and the easiest way for you to generate short
and long term sales. Your list is your company’s lifeblood.
Start building today.

Terry Telford comes from the marketing and advertising world. In 1991, he graduated with honours from the Advertising Program at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario, Canada.

Terry learned the psychology of sales. What to say and more importantly…what not to say to have prospects beating down the doors to buy, buy, buy.

In 2001, he hopped onto the internet with the hopes of expanding his mail order business. At first glance it seemed pretty simple.

There were Free For All (FFA) sites where he could advertise to millions of people, free. Classified ad sites would run ads for $5 or $10, or the big expensive ones were $20 a month.

To put that into perspective, Telford was spending $600-$1000 a month offline on classified ads, so $20 a month was like hitting the jackpot.

Once he had his first online business running profitably, he sold it for $10,000. Then he started a new online business and currently owns 42 websites.

Mesothelioma’s Symptoms

Monday, June 30th, 2008

It is often difficult to differentiate the symptoms of mesothelioma from other diseases. Mesothelioma, much like a handful of other diseases induces very vague symptoms. What makes mesothelioma even more difficult to diagnose is the fact that symptoms typically develop 30 to 40 years after asbestos exposure.

This characteristic in itself makes the disease very dangerous. Once a person actually begins to experience symptoms of the disease, it is typically far too advanced to treat. Mesotheliomas typical symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, weight loss, etc. Now, these symptoms vary from the various types of mesothelioma.

The two most common symptoms that drive people to visit their physician happen to be the two most generic; coughing and shortness of breath. When one has pleural mesothelioma, cancerous tumors develop in the pleural lining. These tumors make it very difficult for the lungs to expand in a correct manner. When tumors in the pleura, pericardium, and peritoneum grow, their host organ subsequently expands.

This allows fluids to enter the organ, triggering numerous other symptoms such as chest pains. These symptoms tend to make it very difficult for a person to sleep and eat. Subsequently, this can result in severe weight loss. If youre experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms and at one time or another have been exposed to asbestos, it is best to visit a physician who can determine whether or not your symptoms are the result of the MS.

If you are experiencing these symptoms and have never been exposed to asbestos, chances are that you are suffering from a different ailment.

50th Birthday - Is It The Birthday For The Blues, or Not?

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Turning fifty can be hard on anyone. And let’s face it, some people even have problems when they turn thirty, though much to my surprise, I didn’t seem to have issues with it.

As the saying goes; ‘life happens’ and whilst it may have been relatively rare just 100 years ago - Now, reaching their 50th birthday for some is only slightly more than ‘half way’ - certainly many people see it as a new beginning, and some even make the move towards starting a home based business which can be particularly rewarding as retirement looms ever closer

We worry that the best years of life are behind us, but I soon learnt that they just keep getting better. Although We live in a world where youth seems to be king, many of us will quickly find out life just goes on, and usually while things do change, overall they seem to get better and better.

However, that doesn’t always make the 50th birthday something easy to handle.

If you know someone who is about to celebrate - or try to ignore - their 50th birthday, why not do something special and surprise them. This is always a really great idea for friends and family, and most especially for your parents.

Some will become gloomy and see the 50th birthday as a sign that the end is coming, but these days that’s not the case.

When planning something special like this, it’s sometimes a good idea to concentrate on what they’ve done and achieved in the past, as most do, but also make sure that you (and they) are looking ahead to what they have yet to do. Treat it as a new beginning!

Don’t dwell too much on the past when you’re planning for a 50th birthday party. You can always reflect on what has happened so far, and most people will love that, but also you should make sure you focus on the future.

It’s a fact that so many are going back to school later and later in life, and have found that new careers, and particularly home based business opportunities, don’t have to start in your twenties.

These days, You can do anything you want at any age, within reason of course, and having a 50th birthday often means that the days of starting anew with excitement have only just begun.

Putting a positive spin on the future is one of the best gifts you can give anyone, and this is definitely no exception - and what better gift than a new source of income from a work at home business. If they want to make plans for their future, this way that future will be affordable

When you’re looking for ideas for a 50th birthday surprise, do take time out to see what is available.

You can go with the standard ‘over-the-hill’ type of theme, but to be honest; that really has been done to death, and is often quite depressing. Particularly if they are young at heart and see their 50th birthday as a new beginning rather than the beginning of the end.

Some handle it ok, but there really is no need to remind them that maybe their best years are behind them - trust me; they’re not!

Instead, and this would be my preference… find fun ways to honor the person who is coming upon the 50th birthday by focusing on the future, not the years that have past.

And then, when it’s your turn, You can hope someone does the same for you when you finally hit that 50th birthday milestone.

This is one of a series of articles by Geoffrey Cummins, articles of hints on just some of the hundreds of things you’ll need to consider when planning your internet home base business idea - you can find out more at http://www.triggersystem.com

Traditional Vs Modern Flamenco

Monday, June 30th, 2008

The fuzzy boundaries of tradition

No sensible person would try to define where traditional ends and modern begins. Sabicas played traditional music but he also played some pretty unusual stuff that could hardly be defined as flamenco. However, I think it would be fair to say that before Paco de Lucia introduced his sextet to the world, complete with flutes, bongos and fretless electric bass, the average person on the street had a rough idea of what flamenco was about. Not any more.

Although I enjoy listening to the more modern interpretations of traditional forms by genuine flamenco artists such as Paco de Lucia and Gerardo Nunez, at the end of the day I still prefer the older stuff. This provides a reference that is, for the most part, unashamedly standard in it’s presentation.

As a guitarist with only a simple wooden box in my hand, it becomes increasingly more difficult to relate to some of the lavish productions released on CD these days. Having said that, I am irresistibly drawn to listen to this modern style of flamenco anyway. Compared to the mind boggling technical abilities of these modern guitar players I am just a struggling amateur. Humbling as it is to listen to this stuff, I draw great inspiration from it all. But it’s sometimes easy to forget that without the work of the past masters to act as guide, modern flamenco would never have evolved into what it is today. So much for the ongoping evolution of traditional flamenco.

New flamenco

What about the other stuff that is erroneously referred to as ‘New Flamenco.’ What is promoted by main stream music companies as flamenco is an entirely different animal. These days the word flamenco is loosely attached to any sort of Latin pop by artists like the Gipsy Kings, Armik and such. While I give full credit to these successful artists and acknowledge their talent, I have an issue with the manner in which these artists are promoted. The exotic form of fusion lounge music played by Ottmat Liebert and similar artists is also openly promoted as flamenco in music stores. I don’t know about you, but this laid back supermarket music makes me think of coconut trees and footprints in the sand. I have no idea what the flamenco connection is supposed to be.

And yet real flamenco CDs, if you can find them at all, are relegated to the World music section or some other obscure category. There is nothing bad or evil or wrong with the so called ‘New Flamenco’ of today. It is all good music and worth listening to, but it is certainly NOT real flamenco by any stretch of the imagination, and never will be.

Here’s a question

How come I keep hearing this so called ‘New Flamenco’ piped through tinny speakers in elevators and shopping malls? Fair enough. It’s good background music and it’s soothing. But I cannot remember the last time I heard real flamenco artists like Sabicas or Paco de Lucia in an elevator.

The bottom line is that the word flamenco sounds exotic and sells CDs for promoters and recording companies who have brainwashed the general public with their misinformed hype. But this is not about them. The point is that the traditional flamenco roots from which these modern artists draw their inspiration will always be there. You can try to change public perception about flamenco and you can even attempt to re-define the word, but you can’t change history.

Foo Fighters

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Dave Grohl, main vocals for the Foo Fighters, used to be the drummer for Nirvana. During Nirvana’s reign, he used to record and write songs on the side. However, Nirvana never used his songs so Dave kept them. After Kurt Cobain’s death, Dave started recording the songs he kept and also passed them around the music industry. It was these songs that formed the foundation for the Foo Fighters.

The band officially formed in 1995. Dave didn’t want to be a solo artist, so he asked Nate Mendal to join him. He met Nate through his wife. At the time Nate was looking for a band to join, as his previous band, Sunny Day, had broken up. William Goldsmith, who was also part of Sunny Day, joined the Foo Fighters shortly afterwards. Nirvana’s former guitarist, Pat Smear, joined and completed the band. William Goldsmith left late in 1996 and was replaced by Taylor Hawkins. Taylor used to be the drummer for Alanis Morrissette before joining the Foo Fighters.

Pat Smear left in 1997. Franz Stahl replaced him until 1999 when he also left. Chris Shiftlett then joined. Since then the band has settled with Dave on vocals and guitar, Taylor on the drums, Nate on bass and Chris on guitar.

They have been classified under the Rock genre, with their heavy guitars and punk sensibilities. However, there is a pop edge on the occasional song, as with Learn to Fly, which is one of their hit singles.

They have a general laid-back, modest attitude, which can be demonstrated with their quotation on MySpace, “you might have heard one of our songs on the radio.” The band reported that some of their influences include Ric Ocasek, Robin Sander, Sonic Youth, Kiss, Black Sabbath and AC/DC.

They brought out their first album in 1995, named Foo Fighters. The origin of the name is from a secret force agency in World War II that researched UFO’s. In 1997 they brought out their second album, The Colour and Shape. In 1999 they released the album, There is Nothing Left to Lose. This album won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2001. Their album One by One came out in 2002.

After performing at the John Kerry Campaigns events in the 2004 US Presidential Election, they were inspired to record their 5th album In Your Honor, which came out in 2005. This year they brought out their latest album, Echoes Silence Patience Grace.

Their latest album contains their single The Pretender, which is currently at number one on billboard.com. It remained at number one on the Modern Rock Charts for 14 weeks and is 8th on UK Singles Track Charts.

The single promises to be more popular than their other hits, including Learn to Fly, This is a Call and All My Life. They are currently touring to promote their new album in Australia. Afterwards they stop off in the UK before touring through America and Canada at the beginning of next year.

By demand they will be playing at the Wembley Stadium on the 7th of June 2008. Owing to tickets having sold out online within the first 11 minutes of their being released, they have planned to play on the 6th of June 2008 as well. But tickets are selling fast.

Not Your Usual Easter Egg Search

Monday, June 30th, 2008

No more wondering about where the infamous gangsters got wacked and what restaurants Jimmy Hoffa frequented to discuss mafia hits in New York’s Little Italy. Cleverly planned scavenger hunts around these fun, historical events and spots, where all the members of the group pitch in and get their kicks finding fun facts together, are an increasingly popular method of bringing people together, whether those people are a family or corporation.

Companies now specialize in creating hunts for anyone and anywhere. They are not “lame” fact finding trivia gathering scavenger hunts, but engaging and involved teamwork-driven adventures that open the eyes to cool historical facts and landmarks.

Public Hunt

The themes and location of the hunt vary, but companies will often post available hunts and adventures on their website where you can usually buy tickets. The public would buy tickets prior to meeting for the scavenger hunt. The attendees are grouped together not much larger than six people each. Each group competes to find answers to 20 or so riddled and pun-like questions given in a set of clue sheets provided by the scavenger hunt emcee. The fastest group to find the answers will win.

Public scavenger hunts are mainly hosted in Major Cities: New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. Although the hunts are a little more geared toward adults, there are still family oriented scavenger hunts like New York Bronx Zoo’s “The Wild Wildlife Scavenger Hunt” and the “Art Attack Family Scavenger Hunt” in L.A’s Getty Museum. To contrast with family night, PG-13 rated scavenger hunts are available as well, such as the Getty’s Nude art pieces with puzzler questions around them.

Private Hunt

The fresh way of starting the next company team building meeting is to have a scavenger hunt. With the private hunt you can call the shots; selecting the place, the group setting, where to go out for drinks later and even throw in some scavenger questions pertaining to the company. It’s a good way to get groups to work together, notice each other’s strengths and have a few laughs on the way.

In addition to a standard scavenger hunt, other options some companies offer include photo questions, where teammates are given a Polaroid camera to take group photo answers for their questions. Another more luxurious option are Limousine hunts. Attendees are chauffeured around town to every question destination. The scope of the game becomes that much grander.

Whatever your reason for taking on a scavenger hunt, you’ll find that modern-day hunts are far more sophisticated — and fun — than what you might remember from your days trying to get into a college fraternity or sorority.

Watson Adventures http://www.watsonadventures.com are the scavenger hunt experts. With clients that include some of the most well-known corporations, corporate scavenger hunts to improve employee cohesiveness and productivity have become a specialty.

Three Easy Paper Halloween Crafts

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Different kinds of paper are probably some of the best materials to use for crafts because of their wide variety of uses and the ease with which they can be handled. Easy paper Halloween crafts might be a good idea for a craft project this October. Here are some of them.

Trick or Treat Bags

One great project for easy paper Halloween crafts are bags that you can give away during trick or treat. The simplest trick or treat bag design would be pasting pumpkin cut outs made from pieces of orange, black and green construction paper. If you want to be more creative with these easy paper Halloween crafts, you can cut out different facial features from construction paper to paste on the bag. You can add special scary features like fangs and horns. Fill the bag with goodies and fold and close the top with some tape. Cut some yarn and glue on the fold for hair.

Witch Masks

Paper plates are one of the most versatile easy paper Halloween crafts. Any Halloween decoration with a circular shape like a wreath or a pumpkin could be made out of paper plates. Aside from decorations, a variety of homemade masks can be made out of them like a witch mask.

In making witches from paper plates, simply paint the back part of your paper plate with light, lime or mint green. Let it dry and carefully cut out eye slots. You can trace the outline of the slots with black ink for effect. For the nose, cut a triangle from a piece of green construction paper and fold the triangle in half. Put some glue on the two long edges of the triangle and attach to the center of the plate just below the eyes. Cut a squiggly mouth from black construction paper and paste below the nose. Cut circles from brown construction paper for moles and warts.

Cut a triangle with curved edges from black construction paper and glue to the top of the plate to make a witch’s hat. Cut a long thin strip of construction paper and paste just below the triangular hat to serve as the hat’s base. Cut holes and insert rubber bands on the opposite sides of the mask. There are no other easy paper Halloween crafts than this.

Ghost Streamer

These easy paper Halloween crafts use additional materials other than paper. Get a circular object such as an old ping pong ball. Cut white crepe paper into long strips with widths that are slightly wider than the circumference of the ball. Stick the ball onto the center of one crepe strip. Put adhesive on the back of the crepe and ball and lay it horizontally on a vertically positioned strip. You should now have a cross of two strips with the ball at the center.

Stick a third strip of crepe to the back of the ball again. Do the same with the other two strips but this time, the crepe should be placed diagonally. Stick a fourth strip going in the opposite direction. Gather the remaining strips and continue sticking horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

Insert your hand under so that you are holding the very base of the pieces of glued crepe. Invert the strips such that the ball becomes completely covered. Gather the strips together and tie at the bottom of the ball. Draw ghostly features on the ball with a marker. Thread a piece of double white yarn on a small square of white cartolina and knot at the bottom. Stick the piece of cartolina on the head of your ghost.

Electric Sitar - Modernizing the Traditional Sitar

Monday, June 30th, 2008

The sitar is undoubtedly one of the instruments that represent a whole culture and tradition behind it. The sitar is one of the main instruments in the classical music of North India. In fact, the sitar has been an integral part of Hindustani music since the Middle Ages. An old Eastern instrument is given a new twist today through the electric sitar.

When the sound reached the west

It was Pandit Ravi Shankar who brought the music of the sitar from his homeland, across the seas, and into the Western lands. When George Harrison started taking sitar lessons from Shankar, the sitar became the rage among youth and in pop culture.

Many people claim that the sound of the electric guitar greatly varies from that of the original instrument. However, this does not stop renowned music artists from using this modern version in their hit songs. These artists include Santana, REM, Guns’n'Roses, Lenny Kravitz, Todd Rundgren, Manic Street Preachers, Metallica and more.

Hear the music

If you love the sound of the old sitar, or you just want to try out a new musical instrument that’s unique, then you should seriously consider buying an electric sitar.

If you’re learning to play the instrument for the first time, it’s best to go with a budget but durable model. You can always buy a more advanced one as you get better. You should also consider the body style of the instrument. If you’re into effects like amplification or long sustains, then pick a solid body. But if you like a more acoustic sound, then go for the more hollow body. An instrument with several pick-ups will also create a wider variety when it comes to sounds.

More information on Electric Sitar is available in Picky Guide, one of the fastest growing online magazines giving free consumer reviews and information.
