Living Onboard a Charter Yacht

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

When considering power yachts and sailing yachts it is realized that there are so many different models and designs of charter yachts. Consequently there will be so many different layouts of the cabins and living quarters on yachts along with the feel and ambiance that different designs generate. It is not possible to cover every option here so it will be better to state the basics that every yacht will have and to familiarize you with the terms that you need to know when booking your vacation to make sure you explain what you want.

What ever the yacht the following terms are the same. The largest and nicest cabin on board is the master cabin, and in most cases has an attached en suite bathroom and will have the largest bed and fittings such as closets and drawers. On larger yachts that might well be a VIP cabin which would be the next nicest cabin. The next level of cabins would be the guest cabins, with double or twin beds. The twin beds might in fact be bunk beds so you must clarify this point when booking to save any disappointments later on. Bunk beds are ideal for kids but may not appeal to adults.

The beds will typically be arranged fore and aft in the yacht. It might mean that you will roll around in your bed as the yacht moves in the sea but this is the best arrangement. If the sailing yacht is heeled over under sail then you will gravitate to one side of the bed. This is not uncomfortable, just different to what you are used to. The alternative arrangement is athwartships which is not so comfortable because as the ship rolls your head is one moment above the level of your feet and the next moment below them. Please keep this in mind when looking at the bed arrangement on any yacht you are thinking of chartering.

Smaller yachts mean smaller cabins and smaller cabins mean smaller beds. The size of yacht that you will charter as a bareboat charter will be at the smaller end of the market and so will have less space and features than a larger crewed charter yacht. The master cabin on a bareboat yacht will often have a three quarter size double bed with two or three sides open to access. The bed could be of a step up island design where it is raised a step up from the cabin floor. This is due to the design of the yacht as the space under the bed is used for other functions of the yacht. The island bed looks grand but can be difficult for taller people who may need to bend more to avoid touching the ceiling when stepping up to get into bed.

The master cabin should have a full length closet, but possibly a half closet and adequate drawers for your clothes and possessions. In the guest cabins with bunk beds be aware the height above each bed may be restricted and more suitable for children than tall adults. The bunks will be quite narrow but you will soon get used to them and in fact they will be quite comfortable if the yacht is rolling as it is easy to brace yourself. In some twin cabins such as the vee cabin in the bow of the yacht the length of the bed might be restricted and a tall person will be unable to stretch out completely. This might also be the case with the bunk beds. This will not be a problem with the master bed as the bottom of the bed will be open.

The closet and draws in guest cabins will be limited in size so do not pack too many possessions. However there will be enough space if the space is managed sensibly. Some yachts have the facility to convert the dining table and couches into a bunk but it is not a good idea to hire a charter yacht with a view to this bed being used by members of the party. This is inconvenient and can cause tension with late risers or untidy guests. It might seem a good idea in the first instance to save money on your sailing vacation but you really should have a fixed bed for every guest.

Bedroom Furniture Designed for Function and Beauty

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Unless you\’re a chronic insomniac or a video game-obsessed teen, the piece of furniture you spend most of your time in is your bed. Granted, most of us are in some varying state of unconsciousness during a good portion of this time. But nonetheless our bed is where we can be found anywhere from five to ten hours of any given day (probably snoring, drooling, or both). For many of us, however, our bed and, in turn, our bedroom furniture, rank fairly low on our list of decorating priorities. Why is this? For most of us, the appearance of the rooms where we do our entertaining (dining room, living room) is more important than a room few others besides ourselves see. While this is understandable, it is also a bit regrettable.

If your bedroom decor warranted you spending more time in it with your eyes open, don\’t you think you probably would? Relaxing with a good book in the afternoon, watching a little TV before bed, or even doing a little internet surfing on your laptop, all of these leisurely activities are more enjoyable in a room that\’s aesthetically pleasing and more conducive to such activities. So how can you transform your bedroom from a drab and lifeless cell into a place of relaxation and tranquility? It\’s actually fairly easy and won\’t cause you to dip into the kids\’ college fund (again).

Sitting up in bed always seems like a better idea than it actually is. Getting comfortable can be a near impossibility and a sure invitation for some lower back pain. The solution is the Sensay Platform Bed. This sleek, modern bed features two separate ergonomic back rests that are gently curved and adjustable up and down, to suit most individual\’s support needs. The Sensay lets you enjoy a book or watch some television from the comfort of your bed while providing the support and comfort your body needs.

The rest of the Sensay Bedroom Set complements the platform bed perfectly. Every piece features the same understated, contemporary look with sharp geometric lines and a simple, Asian-inspired aesthetic.

Cruise Ship Innovations

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

2008 is an exciting year for cruising with the addition of 8 new cruise ships to the booming market.

April - P&O\’s Ventura , MSC Poeisa

May - Independence of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

July - Carnival Splendor, Ms Eurodam (Holland America)

Nov - Ruby Princess, MSC Fantasia

Dec - Celebrity Solstice

Each ship is being built on the promise that it will be bigger and better than its current sailing rivals, with a heavy focus on innovations at sea. Already we have ice skating rinks, rock climbing walls, F1 simulators, self leveling pool tables, boxing rings, bowling alleys and 4 deck high water slides. So the big question everyone\’s asking is; what could possibly be coming next?

Well, the answer is grass. Real growing green grass.

Celebrity Cruises have proudly announced that their latest fleet addition, the Solstice, will feature a grassed lawn area where guests may \”enjoy bocce ball and croquet, practice their putting, picnic with a basket of wine and cheese, or simply feel the grass between their toes, while sailing the oceans of the world\”. And, if all the grass isn\’t too much excitement, you can go and watch the hot glass show, another industry first.

Clever, or just plain dull?

Is this really the best they can come up with? Or, are they taking a brave step outside of the current innovation trend box? In reality, the ice skating rinks are a little on the small side, the bowling alleys only have 4 lanes, and does anyone really want to go boxing? \r It seems the cruise companies are measuring their success on the uniqueness of their ship innovations, but I wonder if that\’s what today\’s typical cruise passenger is really looking for.

Pre 1960\’s cruising was all about the destination, the ship simply providing comfortable accommodation. Then came more emphasis on the actual voyage itself, with the onboard experience becoming as important as the destination. It seems we may now be facing a u-turn, with more and more cruisers wanting to explore new, \”undiscovered\” places which offer a more intimate cruise experience which the mega liners just can\’t offer.

In spite of this, the cruise industry seems to be confidently striving forward with their bigger is better approach with Royal Caribbean\’s mind blowing Genesis project on the horizon. Building by far the largest ships at sea, 2009 will see a vessel that has a capacity of over 5000 passengers with a gross tonnage in excess of 220,000 tonnes, compared to the current largest, the Queen Mary 2 at a mere 160,000 tonnes, it\’s a pretty outstanding figure.

Surely there must be concerns over the damage a ship that large may cause. For a long time, cruise ship damage seems to have been ignored, when, in reality, they are one of the world\’s largest, uncontrolled sources of air pollution, and surprisingly, more damaging than flying. Sewage, oil contamination and coral reef damage are all becoming increasing concerns.

Royal Caribbean have recognized this and have stated that one of the most important priorities for the new ships is energy efficiency and the minimisation of waste to make the ship as environmentally friendly as possible.

What they can\’t control is annoying disembarkation queues, port over crowding and inaccessible ports. But, at least there is a boxing ring to let out all those frustrations, if it\’s not already been booked up…

Intercultural Team Building

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Internal business structures have been radically transformed over the past few decades. Changes in areas such as communication and transportation technology and shifts towards global interdependency have resulted in companies becoming increasingly international and therefore intercultural.

In addition, the need to go global and to cut outgoings is demanding that companies combine protecting international interests whilst keeping down staff numbers. The solution in most cases has been the forming of intercultural teams.

As with all businesses, success depends upon effective cooperation and communication within teams. The intercultural dimension of todays teams however brings with it new challenges. Successful team building not only involves the traditional needs to harmonise personalities but also languages, cultures, ways of thinking, behaviours and motivations.

Intercultural teams have an inherent disadvantage. Cultural differences can lead to communication problems, unpredictability, low team cohesion, mistrust, stress and eventually poor results. However, intercultural teams can in fact be very positive entities. The combination of different perspectives, views and opinions can lead to an enhanced quality of analysis and decision making while team members develop new skills in global awareness and intercultural communication.

In reality this best case scenario is seldom witnessed. More often than not, intercultural teams do not fulfil their potential. The root cause for this is that when intercultural teams are formed, people with different frameworks of understanding are brought together and expected to naturally gel. Without a common framework of understanding, for example in matters such as status, decision making, communication etiquette, this is very difficult and thus necessitates outside help to commix the team.

Intercultural or cross cultural training is one method of helping to blend a team together. Through analysis of the cultures involved in a team, their particular approaches to communication and business and how the team interacts, intercultural team builders are able to find, suggest and use common ground to assist team members in building harmonious relationships.

Intercultural training sessions look at helping a team to realise their differences and similarities in areas such as status, hierarchy, decision making, conflict resolution, showing emotion and relationship building. These are then used to create mutually agreed upon structures of communication and interaction. From this basis, teams are then tutored how to recognise future communication difficulties and their cultural roots, empowering the team to become more self reliant. The end result is a more cohesive and productive team.

In conclusion, for intercultural teams to succeed, managers and HR personnel need to be attuned to the need for intercultural training to help cultivate harmonious relationships. Companies must be supportive, proactive and innovative if they wish to reap the potential benefits intercultural teams can offer. This goes beyond financing and creating technological links to bring together intercultural teams at surface level and going back to basics by fostering better interpersonal communication. If international businesses are to grow and prosper in this ever contracting world, intercultural synergy must be a priority.

Thrift Store Halloween Costume Ideas

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Thrift stores are the perfect place to buy clothing for \r Halloween costumes. The prices are affordable and the \r selection usually wide enough for bountiful creativity. Some\r thrift stores carry Halloween accessories as well, so you may\r pick up everything you need for the following costumes in one\r quick, economical shopping trip.

Titanic Survivor

Pin plastic seaweed and fake aquarium plants to your clothes \r and wear long strands in your hair. Shred the arms and \r pockets of an old shirt, overlay with a shredded vest and \r wear over tattered trousers or a long skirt with a torn hem. \r Wet look fabric is a bonus. Make a long necklace or belt \r from a thick length of hemp rope; unravel the rope ends for \r best effect, and attach a toy sailboat. Hot glue polished \r pennies or fake gold coins (bags of gold chocolate coins are \r great) in strategic places. A fake fish or two sticking out \r of a pocket completes the ensemble. \r

Variations: Titantic Passenger - Wear the costume described \r above, but add ghost or skeleton face makeup or masks. \r

\r Bee Movie Star

\r Make bee antenna by hot gluing small black pom poms to black \r chenille stems, then hot glue the antenna to a black head \r band. Wear a yellow top with black tights or leggings; \r padding the top is optional, but you\’ll need to add stripes \r with black tape. If you\’re going all out, paint your face \r yellow with large black circles around your eyes. \r

Bee Keeper

\r Dress in khaki clothing and a wide brimmed hat. Attach \r netting around the hat brim. Glue fake bees all over the hat \r and clothes. If you have children accompanying you, dress \r them as bees.

\r Pest Exterminator

\r Wear old clothes and a wide brimmed hat with netting around \r the brim. Glue fake bugs, spiders, mice and rats to the \r clothes and hat; if desired, add a mousetrap complete with a \r fake trapped mouse. Carry a net.

\r Hershey\’s Kiss

\r Start with a long, baggy sweat shirt with a ribbed hem that \r pulls in fairly tightly around the bottom of your hips. Pad \r the shirt in the shape of a Hershey\’s kiss and cover with \r strips of aluminum foil tucked in and stapled or glued at \r the hem and neck. For a French Kiss, add a French beret. \r

\r Toy Story Woody

\r A yellow, or yellow-plaid shirt, overlaid by a \r black-and-white cow patterned vest, is the signature look \r for this Toy Story cowboy. Buy a short black or white vest \r and paint on contrasting patches in a random black-and-white \r pattern; wear over a yellow shirt. Add bright blue jeans or \r blue pants, thrift store western-style cowboy boots, and a \r brown or red straw cowboy-style hat. Tie a red bandanna \r around your neck, and add a western style belt or toy gun holster. \r

\r Alice in Wonderland

\r For Alice, you will need a light blue dress with a full skirt,\r overlaid with a white apron. Wear an extra large black bow in\r your hair and white ankle socks with black shoes.

\r Mad Hatter

\r Make or buy a top hat for the Mad Hatter, then attach a \r playing card or two to the hat brim. Buy a long, pocketed jacket at \r the thrift store - in plaid, or the brightest color you can \r find, and a vest in a contrasting color. Make a huge bow tie \r from a rectangle of bright patterned fabric cinched together \r in the middle and wear it around your neck.

\r Gulliver and Lilliputians

\r Buy a white, ruffled shirt with long, full sleeves. Cut long \r pant legs off six inches below the knee; cinch just below the \r knee with a circle of elastic. Wear long white knee socks, \r overlapped by the knee breeches. Make old-fashioned shoe buckles\r by cutting out two rectangles of cardboard with two rectangular \r holes inside; cover with gold foil or paint gold. Finally, run \r thin rope over your shoulders and around your torso; attach small\r doll figures to the rope as Lilliputians trying to tie you down. \r

\r Dog\’s Dinner

\r This one doesn\’t require any shopping at all - you just need a \r very large, empty dog food bag. These come in jumbo sizes to fit\r an adult; smaller sizes would work for children. Wear a brown or\r black track suit. The top of the bag will probably be cut right \r across; if not, cut a straight line as close to the top as possible.\r Cut leg holes in the bottom of the bag. Make suspenders to go over\r your shoulders from transparent tape or ribbon. Hot glue the \r suspenders to the top of the bag. Wear a couple of bone shaped \r cookies in your hair.

Exploring the Popularity Behind Wrought Iron Furniture

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

One of the main reasons that this type of furniture has acquired popularity is due to the pure splendor of the appearance of most pieces. Many different pieces have been created in a majestic fashion. Products composed of this particular type of iron can be used in many different types of decorating styles, places, and in many different ways. An individual can accent the appearance of a basic piece of furniture composed of wrought iron to suit any decorating theme that they wish. The basic simplicity and the ease of luxury wrapped into just one furniture piece is extremely appealing to many.

The next reason that this type of iron has become so popular when it comes to furniture pieces is because of the fact that it is a sturdy unit. While most furniture types are actually assembled in a \”cheap\” manner, wrought iron furniture is carefully crafted with quality and elegance. It is created from one of the sturdiest types of material available today which means that there is no need to worry about replacing it, or the piece experiencing damage. This is a very attractive feature when it comes to furniture selection.

While wrought iron furniture carries a naturally historical and elegant look, it can change as the consumer changes. This specific furniture type can be made to look contemporary, modern, artistic, historical, Victorian, or any other decorative appearance that you can think of. Throw a cushion on it, line it with lace, and drape cloth over it - whatever you wish. You can create simple looks to complex artistic designs by implementing the use of wrought iron furniture in your home. This makes it extremely popular among many decorators and home owners alike!

Wrought iron furniture can be purchased as an antique, or in modern pre-made styles. Many create special orders, and then there are some individuals that create their own type of furniture piece that is composed of wrought iron. People who are interested in this type of furniture that may the specific choice that is most suitable to their budget. Because of this flexibility in pricing, features, and options, wrought iron is extremely popular among consumers wishing to decorate their home in style.

Wrought iron can be integrated into any room of the home, or even on a patio. Many individuals may elect to place wrought iron products in their yard in order to compliment the landscape. Important Tips for Conflict Resolution in the Workplace

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

We\’ve all been in conflict…\r

    \r
  • A fellow employee gets under your skin
  • \r

  • A boss\’ management style demoralizes you
  • \r

  • A subordinate is constantly defiant
  • \r

\r These sorts of conflicts are a normal part of life. The key to proper resolution of these inevitable conflicts is having a set of rules and practices to tip the momentum of your conflicts toward a mutually beneficial resolution.

The place to start when implementing meaningful conflict resolution is with the individual. Each individual is always first responsible for the way they interact within their work environment. You are the one person you have control over.

Here are some tips for conflict resolution. Pay close attention to these conflict resolution tips. They will go a long way in resolving many different types of conflict you may be dealing with.

Stay Calm
\r We rarely do our best when upset and angry. Our anger may put the other person(s) on the defensive.

Choose a Good Time and Place for Conflict Resolution
\r Find a place free from interruptions and have plenty of time so no one feels rushed or at a disadvantage.

Focus on the Problem
\r Don\’t focus on the person you are in conflict with. Avoid blaming, name calling and putdowns. Be respectful and accept responsibility for your share of the conflict.

Truly Listen to the Other Side
\r This may be the last thing you want to do since you may feel upset or offended. But listening carefully (with the ears, body and mind without thinking of your response) is the most important tip for successful conflict resolution. Another tip is to let each person talk for 10-20 minutes without replying. Just listen.

Explore Resolutions
\r Let everyone offer as many resolutions as possible, with neither side evaluating the suggestions offered. Once all possibilities are on the table then everyone can face the problem(s) together, reviewing the ideas youve generated and evaluating their usefulness. Team up on the problem, not each other.

Commit to the Resolution
\r If parties agree on a resolution to the conflict, commit yourself to the resolution. Know full well that it will take some time and there WILL be set backs. Set backs are part of the process.

Still Unresolved?
\r Be honest with yourself. Do you really want to resolve the conflict or does it just seem that way? It may be that the conflict is really serving another purpose.

DON\’T GIVE UP!

Build on the cooperation youve established in the first effort. Agree to a time-out and a place to try again. Go back to step one, acknowledge that while a solution may not have been found, tension has been reduced and you are communicating.

Most conflicts stem from poor communication. By helping people to communicate better, you are able to create a work environment that is more cohesive and profitable. Using these conflict resolution tips will provide a solid foundation for accomplishing this.

Six Tips for Binding Documents With Spiral Coil

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Spiral coil binding is one of the most popular binding styles used today. It offers a contemporary look and feel with some great features such as full three hundred and sixty degree rotation. However, binding documents with spiral coil can be a little bit tricky, especially if you have never done it before. This article will provide you with six simple tips for binding your documents with spiral coil. Here they are.

\r

There are several different hole patterns used for spiral coil binding. The most common hole pattern is 4:1 pitch (four holes per inch). However, spiral coil spines are also available in 5:1 pitch (five holes per inch) and in 3:1 pitch (three holes per inch). More than 90% of users choose a 4:1 pitch machine since the supplies are easier to find and less expensive. However, it is also important to note that some 4:1 pitch punches use a 43 hole pattern while others use a 44 hole pattern. If you decide to order pre punched covers or need to match a hole pattern from an existing document you will need to count the holes to make sure that you end up with the appropriate number of holes.

  • Using oversized covers with your coil binding machine is not recommended. In fact, many coil binding machines are not capable of handling oversized covers. When you try to punch an oversized cover with a coil binding machine the holes may not line up with the paper that you have punched or you may end up with extra holes.
  • Most coil binding machines do not have fully disengageable dies. This means that you can not choose to stop a single pin from punching. This makes it difficult to bind odd sized books and documents with your machine. Most coil binding machines are capable of binding letter and half letter sized documents. If you are going to need to bind smaller or larger documents, it is recommended that you choose a machine with fully or partially disengageable dies.
  • Once you have the holes punched in your document you will need to spin the coil onto the spine of your book. Start by taking the spiral coil and spinning through the first few holes of the document by hand. If you have a machine with a spiral coil inserter on it, you can use the roller from your inserter to spin the element the rest of the way onto the document. However, be careful that you don\’t spin the book right off the other side. If you don\’t have an electric inserter, you will need to simply spin the coil onto the book by hand.
  • The final step in finishing a book bound with spiral coil is to crimp the ends of the coil so that the spiral doesn\’t spin back off the book. Special coil crimping pliers are used to cut off the excess coil and bend over the end in a single step. It is possible to achieve the same results using a pair of needle nosed pliers but it is much more difficult and will require multiple steps. If you do have a pair of crimping pliers it is important to remember two things. The red dot should always face the ceiling and the spine of the book should always face towards you.
  • Binding documents that are less than one inch thick is fairly simple with colorcoil. However, binding documents that are larger than an inch can be somewhat difficult. In order to bind larger documents you will need to form the spine of the document so that it matches the curved shape of the coils that you are planning to insert. Most coil binding machines have a spine shaper built into them. However, if you are planning on binding lots of thick documents using coil you might want to consider buying a stand alone spine forming device. You should also note that you most likely will not be able to use your coil inserter for thicker documents. You will need to spin the coils on by hand.
  • These are five simple things to remember when binding documents with spiral coil binding. Good luck and happy coilbinding.
