Keep all sensitive and important documents locked away in a file cabinet or a safe. These may include (but are not limited to) social security cards, birth certificates, financial documents, passports, and other important documents. Make copies of all these documents and store them in a secure location.
Expensive and high priced jewelry should also be kept in a secure location, such as a safe.
Your home insurance policy should include theft, so any items that are stolen (whether jewelry, electronics, etc.) are covered by insurance and you will have no problem replacing them.
If you do have a safe, change the safe code occasionally and keep it somewhere other than the master bedroom or closet, which is often the first place a burglar will look.
Also consider storing important documents (or copies) in a safe deposit box.
One of the best ways to protect not only your valuables, but you and your family in the event of a burglary attempt, have an alarm system installed in your home. Visible signage will help deter burglars and make sure the alarm has an audible horn or alarm, needed to be effective.
Make sure you have backup software on any computers in your home. Without the proper backup, the theft of any personal computers could mean the loss of important financial documents, priceless digital photographs, and entire music collections.
Don't keep large amounts of cash in your home.
Keep your cars locked even when parked inside the garage.
Install high quality Grade-1 or Grade-2 locks on outside doors to withstand prying and twisting and deter any lock-picking attempts.
While this may seem obvious, keep all windows locked, even those on second or third floors.
