More From Ryan Adams And The Cardinals

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Ryan Adams used to blame his prolific writing & recording on the demons of drug and alcohol addiction. Fortunately for all of us, Adams has found sobriety, and in so doing he\’ll need to find something new to blame for his almost unbelievable output of music (nine solo albums, a forthcoming 5 disc box set, this 4th release with the Cardinals, plus a handful of recordings released under various identities).

\”Follow The Lights\” could easily be titled \”Follow Easy Tiger\” as the first three tracks sound like they could have fit anywhere on that brilliant CD, which came out just three months ago. The remainder of this seven song EP is made up of three excellent remakes of tracks from earlier Ryan Adams releases - and one incredible cover of an Alice In Chains tune (honestly) \”Down In A Hole.\” The first remake, \”This Is It\” was originally on \”Rock N\’ Roll\” - the new version with the Cardinals shows there was a soaring lyric that was unfortunately lost in its earlier rendition.

\”If I Am A Stranger\” is a stripped stark naked version of the song that was originally recorded with the Cardinals on \”Cold Roses\” - and it\’s just gorgeous done with a pair of acoustic guitars, a peddle steel, and a barely audible percussion. Also stripped down is the track \”Dear John.\” Originally recorded with Norah Jones on \”Jacksonville City Nights\” this version without her is just amazing - guitarist Neal Casal takes over the second vocal, and simply soars with it. Those fortunate enough to see the band on its last tour will recognize this version of the song.

Hands down, my favorite from the seven song set is the Alice In Chains cover. Turning Jerry Cantrell\’s grunge anthem into an aching alt-country, broken man bar room prayer was no small feat. To me it shows how far out on the edge Adams will take his adaptations of not just his own songs, but those of others others as well. This release can be had for $5.98 from amazon.com, or for the almost sinful price of $4.52 as an mp3 download. For Adams fans, it\’s a must have - and for new followers - it aint a bad place to start!

Christian Music History

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The phrase Christian music. The first thing that comes to mind is organ played in churches, monks chanting gregorian or nuns singing in chorus. Perhaps there is some truth in this common everyday image, however it probably isn\’t waterproof if you ask theologians or historians. This article aims to provide a brief guide of christian music throughout history. To my help, I will use a reliable free source called Wikipedia.

After reading a bit from Wikipedia already, I forgot to mention the \’obvious\’ worship songs played in service. That is, when attending church. Lets see. If if we take into account what I wrote above, I discover that maybe I had a point. In today\’s time, modern influences have given rise to Gospel, Contemporary Christian Music, Southern Gospel, Country like version, Christian rock, pop, metal, punk, hip hop and variations thereof.

These would denote the genres of today. With an historical background, (considering church and movements) there are hymns, gregorian chant, antiphons and psalmody. Two of these sound familiar to me, a third I might guess, but there is still some research to do.

Hymns
\r These songs can be based on Bible passages (i.e. The Lord is my Shephard), but are often written by writers within Evangelical churches (i.e. Methodist or Baptist). Hymn is imported from Greek and translates directly to \”song of praise\”. From what I gather, they can be accompanied by ordinary piano, organ or sung in a capella. Within the Catholic Church and various Protestant congregations, they are written with thought to individual saints (Catholic church), celebrations like Christmas, Lent, Easter. As a sacrament, they\’re also used in baptism and Holy Communion (or Eucharist). In a general statement, modern genres are deemed to be inspired from modern music forms of today. That\’s the reason many prefer to not incorporate new songs to given hymnal (list of hymns, collective, or collection), according to Wikipedia.

Someone who writes these type of songs is referred to as hymnist. Using inflection, we also derive hymnody for its practice. The hymn doesn\’t necessarily always have any music, but can also be recited as prayer or used in a cappella as mentioned above.

Before piano and organ, medieval and people of Ancient Greek employed lyte, harp or lyre which categorize under stringed instruments. No clear melody can read from notations since they weren\’t founded at the time.

Gregorian
\r Gregorian chant (its genre named after Pope Gregorian, although experts contend it owes its form to Carolingian background. However, it has also been spotted in published work of historical figures William of Hirschau and Leo IV.) was performed by monks (monastic) choir in the Middle Ages. The chant sung in unison yields a powerful and pervasive sound. Performed inside a church or chapel, the echoing and vibrant sound lend the highly religous air to the score. The music is considered monophonic, which at the easy level denotes a very simple melody.

The work within the genre is considered to be a form of hymnolody and is originally in Latin. Recordings (or notations) date back to the 10 century. However, the GC was practiced prior to that. Before, singers were tought in Schola Cantorum, employing the viva voce method. That is, to learn by listening to examples. Today there is a music band who have chosen this genre, one of them actually titled Gregorian.

Historical recordings and notations were undertaken in Frankish areas of Europe (western and central), 9th and 10th century, AD. However, several melodies are believed to adapted from its predecessors centuries before. Its real origin is believed to stem from Carolingian influence, which drew from both Roman and Gallican versions of the so called plain chant. The traditional credit to Gregory was, in my own interpretation, the effort of creating one standard to apply within liturgy (service, communion) in all of Europe. The Pope ruled with divine authority, and would be instrumental in instituting the new musical form.

Without historical deviations, it can be said to belong within the Catholic Church, sung at Mass and in choir.

Antiphonic
\r GC music can be described as antiphonic. Antiphonic would denote two choirs enjoined different (or alternating) segments/part to sing, connecting the two choirs in the same performance. Antiphonic performance is believed to stem from communion used by ancient Israelites. This notion did not exist at the time. The reason it made its way into the Christian faith is found in the work of Socrates. According to him, the frontfigure was Ignatious of Antioch who had an epiphany, in which he had seen angels sing in the antiphonic style.

A subvariation is named polychoral antiphony, (inherent trait of Venetian school music, and came to life in late Renaissance and continued into late Baroque. Famous composers for this style include Igor Stravinsky, Hector Berlioz and Karlheinz Stockhausen.) Antiphonic music is also adopted within the Anglican church.

Psalmody
\r Psalms stem directly from the Bible, where songs are picked from verses of the Book of Psalms. The better known include: Psalm 23, The Lord is my Shepard; 103, Bless the Lord, O my soul; 51, Have mercy on me O God (Miserere in Latin version). 137, The Rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, is aimed at slavery and played during Lent.

Eastern Orthodox churches have incorporated psalms into a standardized method of praying. The total of 150 psalms are split into 20 seperate sections, each called a kathisma (translated as sitting) . The Kathisma in its turn, is made up of tree staseis (translated as standing). Kathismata is recited during important days of the year. Less stringent Christians read one khatisma a day on working days, with the hole book completed in four weeks.

All in all, I believe most people share common and truthful ideas about christian music. And perhaps we\’re better off with a general grasp. For the laity, or non-musicians, it would be too an overwhelming task to learn everything since there it wouldl involve a great deal of theology. Impossible for the commoner, who might be scared of going to church.

Finding The Right Acoustic Guitar Reviews

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

When you are looking to buy a new acoustic guitar, it is a good idea to read as many acoustic guitar reviews before you invest your money. There are two different types of reviews around today. The first is the one which has been written by an expert and is someone who has had the chance to try out various different guitars regularly. Whilst the other is written by users and relates to one specific guitar that they are using.

When you look at the expert reviews you will find that these have been written by people who have had several years experience of playing these kinds of guitars. When looking at expert reviews the better ones should provide you with details on several different types which they have been able to use. Not only should they be pointing out the good points of each one but also their bad points as well, even if they do prefer a particular one over the others. It is important that if they have a bias towards a particular guitar they should clearly explain in their review why this is. You do not need someone who has a Bachelor\’s Degree in Music, rather you want someone who knows what they are talking about.

But when it comes to user reviews look for websites where reviews are offered on every time of guitar that is available and has been written by several different types of musicians. The best place to search for such reviews is at online music stores. But it is important that when looking at these reviews you read those written by those who play the same kind of music as you and are at the same level in relation to performance abilities.

When you are looking for acoustic guitar reviews online there are certain things which you can do which can make the whole process of finding the right ones much easier. Firstly when carrying out a search online place quotation marks around the phrase that you are using as your search criteria. So for acoustic guitar reviews you would type in to the search box \”acoustic guitar reviews\”.

By using this phrasing when searching on sites like Yahoo you will be able to greatly reduce the number of search results that come back. Without the quotation marks you will end up with around 17 million search hits but with them this is reduced to just over 6,000. Also you can use this same search trick when looking for the review on a specific type of guitar. For example if you just type in Martin DX1 you will get around 38,000 search hits, but by typing in \”Martin DX1\” this will reduced down to only 10,000.

Another trick that you may want to try when searching for acoustic guitar reviews is by including a plus sign (+) in to the search criteria. If you do this then the search engine will refine it searches to only include those that contain the exact phrasing that you have typed into the search box. Typing in \”Martin DX1 review+\” will come with a total of nine search results on Yahoo, because the search engine has only looked for those sites which have the exact same phrasing that you have typed in.

Also if you want to further try and get even better reviews relating to the acoustic guitar you are interested in then mix up the words that you are using as your search criteria. If say for example you type in \”Martin DX1\”+review rather than just getting nine search results back you will find that Yahoo now offers you about 500. Plus using this trick you can search for specific information in relation to say what kind of action the instrument has. Just simply include within your search criteria action before the plus sign and the search engine will do the rest.

If you use the tricks that we have mentioned above then you will find it much easier to find the right kinds of acoustic guitar reviews that you are after. This will not only save you a lot of time but it will help to make the decision as to which one you should buy much easier also.

Above we have provided some useful advice on how to go about searching for the right kinds of acoustic guitar reviews. If you would like to find out more about this instrument including about learning how to play it then visit Acoustic Guitar Information

Jordan Rudess The Road Home Heavy Metal Music CD Review

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

The exceptionally talented Heavy Metal artist Jordan Rudess has released him CD entitled The Road Home. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Jordan Rudess fans, and Heavy Metal fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of The Road Home Jordan Rudesss artistic excellence is on full display as Rudess has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be him best work to date.

Unfortunately, its not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cant force myself to get through. Not at all the case with The Road Home. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

The Road Home has a nicely varied, mix of 6 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly gifted artist. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

Overall The Road Home is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Heavy Metal collection. Truly an outstanding Heavy Metal CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While this entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 3 - Just The Same, track 2 - Sound Chaser, and track 6 - Tarkus.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore […as in \”Stuck On REpeat\”] is track 1 - Dance On a Volcano. Great track!

The Road Home Release Notes:

Jordan Rudess originally released The Road Home on September 11, 2007 on the Magnatude Records label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. Dance On a Volcano

Learn To Play The Guitar Online Lesson?

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Guitar lessons online are a much cheaper, faster method of learning how to play the guitar. Although learning an instrument online does seem a little weird, it can be done. However, a very important aspect of playing the guitar that is hard to learn online is posture.

When most people get a guitar they simply grab it, put it on their leg, sit down, and begin to play. Simple right? Yeah it\’s simple and it\’s also wrong. Holding the guitar like this makes many problems with the guitars alignment. When the instrument is held like this it is easy to play some chords and some notes. However, when trying to play other more complex things like major scales or minor scales this positioning becomes a nuisance.

What thing will improve your guitar positioning? A chair. Yes a chair will help your guitar alignment. The chair must be a certain height. It should be no higher than up to your knees when you stand near it. It should also have no arms because the arms of the chair will simply get in the way. Another chair is also needed. Well…not really a chair but a foot stool.

This stool is used for your leg so that it can be elevated for the guitar to rest on. When you sit on the chair do not slouch and make sure you are close to the edge. Make sure that you have good posture with your shoulders leveled and your back straight. It is alright if you want to look down at what you are playing, however, keep away from leaning over to see what you\’re playing.

When people learn to play the guitar online they most likely aren\’t having any type of posturing. Posture can greatly aid in a better playing experience. And having good posture from the beginning is good as it\’ll prevent bad habits that could develop.

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Art Porter has released him most recent album entitled Lay Your Hands On Me.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Gillian Welch - Revival - Rock Music CD Review

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Gillian Welch, very talented Rock artist has released her latest album titled Revival and Wow! Its really a good one.

Unfortunately, its not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cant force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Revival. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

The nice thing about a CD like this is with this level of talent even if Rock isnt your favorite genre you still cant help but appreciate the greatness of the artist.

If youre a Gillian Welch fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you dont even have to be a fan of Welch, or even Rock to know is good. Its just good music. Period.

While this entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 3 - Pass You By, track 8 - Tear My Stillhouse Down, and track 10 - Only One And Only

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore […as in \”Stuck On REpeat\”] is track 1 - Orphan Girl. Great track!

3. Pass You By

10. Only One And Only

James Bio And Top 10 Songs

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

James is probably my favorite of all the Manchester bands that I like (you have to support your own boys and girls). I first started listening to James because my sister P liked them when I was a kid. James is comprised of Tim Booth, Jim Glennie, Larry Gott, Saul Davies, Mark Hunter and Dave Baynton-Power. They formed in 1981 in Whalley Range in Manchester. In my eyes James was at the forefront of the Manchester Indie scene in the early 1980\’s and were of the dance, trance, indie drug fueled genre of the time.

I remember falling in love with their first album (Stutter) and since them have followed them religiously, always getting the albums as soon as they hit the shelves. I went to see James play at the Manchester G-Mex exhibition center and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life. When the song \”Sit Down\” (which is probably the song most people know James for) came on the whole building as one sat down to listen and watch Tim on stage.

To me James is not like any other band that has passed or will ever come in the future, they are totally unique which is why they appeal to me so much, I believe that I am as unique in my thoughts and actions. When Sit down was released as a single it took 2nd place only to Chesney Hawk\’s \”The One And Only\” which was a massive hit in itself.

James will forever be remembered as a \”Live\” act as this is where their excellence shines and the performances are not to be missed if ever you get the opportunity. I am upset that I am currently in the US and will miss their upcoming tour, I was thinking about returning for it and then coming back to the US if funds allow.

Over their live tours James has had many famous supporting acts who themselves have become very popular such as The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Nirvana, Radiohead, The Corrs, Stereophonics, Supergrass and even Coldplay.

James has released many albums over the past 20 years, the most notable being; Stutter, Gold Mother, Seven, Laid, Millionaires and Pleased to Meet You. Their new album (Hey Ma) will be released in the UK on the 7th April so look out for it.

My Top 10 James songs are as follows:

01. Top Of The World
\r 02. Johnny Yen
\r 03. Sandman (Hup-Springs)
\r 04. U Cant Tell How Much Suffering
\r 05. God Only Knows
\r 06. Sit Down
\r 07. Don\’t Wait That Long
\r 08. Out To Get You
\r 09. Sometimes (Lester Piggott)
\r 10. English Beefcake

Sky Blue Sky - What\’s Not To Like About That Title?

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

While I was aware of Wilco for a long time, I didn\’t become a fan(atic) until the historical \”Yankee Hotel Foxtrot\” came out. Looking back at some of their earlier works, \”Summerteeth\” was my next favorite release from the band. \”A Ghost Is Born,\” which featured a new lineup for the band, never fell into place for me - looking back, I can\’t think of a single track that really made an impression on me from that release. \”Sky Blue Sky\” on the other hand, is just phenomenal - and while it may not be as groundbreaking for the band as \”Yankee Hotel Foxtrot\” was, I actually think this is a stronger release.

In reading other reviews, there is a common tendency to compare this record to the sounds of other artists - \”this song sounds like John Lennon, that one like the Grateful Dead, the other like Neil Young…\” but I honestly don\’t get any of that. To me, this album sounds like Wilco all grown up and fully at terms with who they are and how they sound. Musically, every song is a more interesting composition than virtually any other \”rock\” music being released today. Jeff Tweedy and company have mastered turning a song completely around somewhere over its course, and the result is always refreshing and interesting listening.

There isn\’t a bad song on the CD, making picking a handful of favorites difficult. The four that REVOLVERFM are playing are probably my top choices. \”Walken\” starts out like a bayou honky tonk and ends in a blistering fury. \”Impossible Germany\” is so lyrically fresh that you almost miss how beautiful the guitar lines are. \”Hate It Here\” is another track that picks up momentum throughout the tune, ending in a big brass and electric thunder.

Listening to the CD makes it easy to understand why when it poured down rain during their last visit to Atlanta recently, not a fan flinched, and not a fan cared - all that mattered was that the band was still playing. Much like the CD is still wearing out my car stereo!
