Cruise Travel - How to Find Active Cruises for Seniors

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

If you\’re a senior citizen, you\’re most likely aware of the number of cruise options that are tailored specifically toward the senior market. With cruise lines offering \”Golden\” Cruises, \”Silver\” Cruises, and Adults-Only cruises, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of options that are geared toward you and your interests.

Unfortunately, it\’s a bit harder to find adventure or \”active\” cruises for seniors. To learn about active cruise options for seniors as well as how to get the most out of your active/adventure cruise, keep reading.

Pick a Cruise with \”Active\” Amenities

Whether or not you\’re booking a senior-specific cruise, opt for a ship that has a lot of \”active\” amenities. For example, booking a boat that has on-board golf, tennis, swimming, gym facilities and activities like whale-watching and bird watching will get you on board a ship that\’s already geared toward your active lifestyle. You\’re also more likely to meet seniors like you who are interested in active and healthy living.

Look For a Variety of Ports of Call

By booking a cruise with many stops, you\’ll have access to more shore-side activities, greater sightseeing opportunities and a wider variety of shopping and food options. Most cruises tailored toward the \”adventure\” or \”active\” market will offer a variety of shore activities, including low-impact and \”senior-friendly\” excursions like sea kayaking, scuba diving, easy nature hiking and on-land golf.

Always ask for a Senior\’s Discount

Most cruise lines offer a senior\’s discount for travelers over a certain age. Always ask for the senior\’s rate. You\’ll save anywhere from 10-50% off the regular rate. A number of cruise lines also offer veteran\’s rates for veterans and their spouses or families. If you\’re a former serviceman, don\’t hesitate to ask for a service special.

Remember to Relax

Most cruise ships offer a spa facility. Especially if you\’re active, remember to take the time to enjoy and indulge. At an onboard spa, you\’ll enjoy massages, facials, skin treatments, hair cuts, manicures and a wide variety of other aesthetic options. Don\’t forget to reserve your spot early.

Finally, cruise ships are one of the safest places to vacation in the entire world. It\’s an enclosed environment with a carefully screened staff, so you can worry less about theft or violence. Whether you\’re vacationing alone or with someone you know, you are sure to have a fun and memorable experience aboard the cruise ship of your choice.

Rules You Should Follow on Cruises

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

It can be really exciting going on holiday but when you are considering going on a cruise, there are some things which you really need to think about. Things such as manners are often forgotten and whilst you may be paying a lot of money to go on the vacation, you still need to remember to be polite.

Remembering Your Manners

You are not going to be alone on the ship even if you are actually traveling alone. Generally the passengers on the ship including you are part of a community and even the staff is included in that too. Think about it, you have your meals cooked for you and you do not even have to do any washing up. Yes you are paying for the privilege but there really is no need to be rude to staff and passengers because you have paid!

So how should you act on a cruise ship? Well the first thing you should consider is tipping. When you go to a restaurant or to the hairdressers, usually it is custom to leave a tip afterwards. This is exactly the same on a cruise ship so whenever you can, tip the staff for their service to you. After all you cannot have a good time if the staff look miserable and if they provide poor service can you.

Now when it comes to the other passengers there are also basic rules that you should stick to. The first is not to cut in line for things. Whether it is for an attraction, a queue to eat or generally just when passengers are standing around, it is just not nice to cut in front of people or rudely push them out of the way. So if you do need to get passed somebody be polite about it and dont spoil the relaxing atmosphere.

You should also consider your manners when you are watching something such as a theatre show. When everyone is trying to focus on the show they do not want to hear you talking or making a lot of noise so be respectful of that and you should be ok.

One thing which you may not think about is the dress code on the ship. Now each cruise liner will be different but usually there are quite strict rules about what you should and shouldnt wear, especially during meal times. So if you do prefer to dress a little more casual then ensure that there is a fairly casual restaurant on the cruise ship.

If you do not follow simply ship rules then the other passengers could feel uncomfortable and they could start to dislike you for your lack of compliance. This would obviously make the vacation a little less enjoyable and you would not com back feeling refreshed. Cruises provide you with a fantastic opportunity to see new things and to forget about everything so do not spoil it by not following general ship rules.

Royal Caribbean Cruises - Amenities for Disabled Passengers

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Royal Caribbean Cruises prides itself on providing a top quality cruising experience for anyone who wishes to partake and with this aim in mind; Royal Caribbean ships come equipped to make cruising as comfortable and as easy as possible for disabled customers.

All amenities are in place on the ships for disabled guests, but contacting the Access Coordinators when planning your trip is advised in order that you may be able to take full advantage of the on board provisions whether your needs involve wheelchair or scooter access, hearing or visual aids, service animal or dietary requirements.

For those in need of wheelchair access, a number of ships come with accessible staterooms close to the elevators with 32 inch wide doors, flat floors, and a 5-foot turning radius in areas for sleeping and sitting as well as the bathrooms. The bathrooms come with grab bars and built-in shower stools, lowered sinks and raised toilet seat. All corridors are wide enough to make a 180 degree turn in a wheelchair, outside doors are touch-button operated, public rooms have inclines rather than steps and ramps are used where necessary.

For those with hearing impairments, there are a certain number of rooms with strobe-light door knockers and telephone ringers, amplifiers for the telephones, under mattress or under pillow vibration alarm clocks, and assistive listening aids in the theatres. For those with visual impairments, Braille menus, elevator buttons and cabin doors are in place, and large print menus are available on request.

In addition, Royal Caribbean Cruise is able to provide facilities for Oxygen treatment and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis whilst recommending independent contractors who can provide for those in need of HEMO Dialysis on board.

It should be noted that the equipment itself is not provided for by Royal Caribbean, but their facilitating ideology makes it as easy as can be for people in need of these treatments to cruise.

Cruise Activity - What Kind Of Activities Are Available On A Cruise?

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

When you get the information about your cruise, you will be given a list of practically every cruise activity imaginable. If your cruise is like most, you will not be able to do them all. There are two good ways to choose. One is to do all the activities of one kind, and the other is to do one activity of each of several different kinds.

Physical Activities

If you are an energetic person, you may want to take all your activities from this category. If you just want to keep in shape, you might try one. Sports on cruise ships are usually fairly laid back. People do not tend to be as competitive when they are surrounded by the beautiful open sea. However, your experience may be different.

A sports cruise activity can be anything from basketball to ice skating. You can play golf on many cruises and also get lessons from a golf pro right onboard. Many of the newer cruise ships have rock climbing walls built in for your use. Some of the physical activities are strictly for exercise. These may include Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, aerobics, and any other type of exercise.

Fine Living

A more sophisticated person will want a type of cruise activity that will include the arts and fine living. Even if this is not your only choice, you might enjoy a taste of luxurious living. Some of the activities are wine tasting, art auctions, and painting lessons.

There are also afternoon high teas, cigar and cognac hours, and a cocktail party with the captain. Dancing is encouraged, and there are many opportunities to learn a number of dances, from Latin dance to waltzes. Some ships have guest lecturers, while most will offer theater, possibly Broadway productions. Music varies from disco with a DJ to a stringed quartet.

Jewelry seminars are held to prepare buyers for the market where they may purchase gems. These are held by experts in the field. They give the buyers a chance to see up close the aspects of the gems they should be looking for before making their purchases.

Games

Cruise coordinators come up with dozens of crazy games every year. They are designed to create a party atmosphere. They also help people get to know each other better. One example is a take-off on an old game show. The cruise game is called: What\’s My Job? People ask the subject questions about his or her job. When they get the answers, they try to guess the job.

Of course, if you like casino games, you are in luck. Not only is the casino open all the time the ship is at sea. It is also filled with dealers who love to teach the games. This makes for a much more relaxed atmosphere.

Take your choice of the different types of cruise activity, or choose some from each. If your cruise is like most, you will not have trouble finding something to occupy your time.

Cruise The Bahamas On A Two-Day Imperial Majesty Cruises

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Imperial Majesty Cruises offer an unusual cruise option in their 2-day Bahamas cruise from Florida. The Regal Empress is a smaller ship than the extra-large cruise ships that are standard among the major cruise lines. Yet, it offers a pleasant ride for those who wish a shorter getaway.

The Extras

People from the cruise line go to the terminal when you arrive for your voyage. They will help you with your luggage and take it aboard the ship. This takes the place of porters who usually handle your luggage. There is even a steward who will take you to your cabin when you arrive.

You also have a chance to pay for upgrades in cabins, as some are usually available. Cabins are unusual in that you will find an abundance of storage for all the items you have brought along on your trip. What is more, those card keys that can be so difficult to make work at times are not used on the Regal Empress - you get a real key instead.

The Dining

Reviewers rate the food on Imperial Majesty Cruises as some of the best available on cruise ships. The focus of the food service is on quality, not on how much food they can prepare. The foods are made of fresh ingredients, which is easy since the ship goes back to its starting point every other day. All the dishes are prepared with care.

There is another place to eat besides the main dining room, too. La Trattoria is a small buffet that is available late nights for night owls who get hungry between karaoke and dancing. These buffets are themed with such themes as Italian night or Latin food night. You will also find snacks being served on the deck in the afternoons.

The Cruise

The cruise is a two-day cruise, so you do not have a lot of time spent in the Bahamas. In fact, you usually get about six hours in port. The short vacation can be a relaxing break for you if your life is especially stressful. However, do not expect more vacation than you can get in two days.

You will have time for live entertainment, time at the casino, discos, lounges, and more while you are at sea. The six hours you spend in Nassau are actually enough to see and do many things. If you get right out there, you will not feel as if you have traveled to the Bahamas for nothing.

Imperial Majesty Cruises are good for introducing you to cruise vacations if you have never gone on one before. They are much like the large cruise lines, but on a smaller scale. You do not have to spend nearly as much money or set aside as big a block of time to take one of these cruises. That makes it ideal for you if you do not want to make a large commitment.

Memorable Cruise Experiences

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

You cannot expect to go out on cruising daily and in fact this rare experience you may not have more than once in your life. One thing is certain however that if you go on several cruises no one will be like the other, variations will be there on each-the boat, the destination, the adventures and the activities. You cannot allow those precious moments even to fade away in your memory. For keeping those rare times intact in your mind some tested steps you will learn about now.

Cruise travels open out mines of rare experiences
\r You are conscious of course that it would appear awkward for you to take snaps like a tourist before the onlookers\’ eyes. Never bother about such uneasiness since the others there do not bother about such feeling. Everyone present is a tourist after all while each carries a camera in his bag and is waiting only for an opportune moment to snap. When you will view the pictures later their presence in those will make you happy. In some of those the crews in their characteristic uniforms and possibly the captain himself would be present as the special attractions. Ask them politely when they are not so busy for permission to take their pictures and surely they will smilingly give consent and your collection will thus be enriched. Do away your uneasiness with taking snaps and discover some fun too in it quite often. Think once how your friends will enjoy seeing a picture in which you are catching unaware a companion on the ship with a show of pushing him down! Come forward to create situations you would prefer for your snaps that you will never forget-some may be romantic, some funny, and some silly even.

Holiday means enjoyment if you go out on cruising
\r A scrapbook or a memory box too can be nice enough. Save to your maximum ability since that is the secret for their personal value in real sense of the term. When you will retrieve from your memory box so many apparently trivial things of the cruising period after many years, you will appreciate their true values and thank god that they had not gone in permanent hiding inside your memory storage. The details on room reservation will help you recapitulate later what were the special amenities you had enjoyed and if you collect a copy of the menu from the waiter you will regain memories of the cruise ship\’s first dinner. Your loss of $50 in bingo on a fateful evening will be a sweet memory as you look at the casino slip after many years.

Vacation cruising means funs too so do not let memories fade away.
\r During the cruise you will spend a nice time no doubt but be careful not to allow those sweet and valuable memories go unrecorded. There will be plenty of incidents worth remembering and therefore except in case of extreme urgency you need not venture on stealing another person\’s soap!

Two Items You Should Not Leave Home Without

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Todays modern mariner appears, on the surface, to be better equipped than the small legion of yesteryears voyagers. Of course, neither Christopher Columbus, Joshua Slocum nor I had access to a GPS when we were plying the seven seas - a sextant pretty much told us where we were. While a GPS, Sat/Nav, radar, loran, VHF radio, ham radio, radio receiver, and solar panels are probably nice to have, there are two pieces of equipment that I discovered in my extensive wanderings that are indispensable. You could undoubtedly do without these two items and survive just fine, but having them makes all the difference in the world, literally. Im talking about an outboard motor and an autopilot.

Now, before you get all condescending and roll your eyes around your head in disgust or disbelief, just wait a moment. Even if you are a purist, and Ive known many, youll find that an outboard and an autopilot can tremendously enhance the quality of your trip.

I myself scoffed when my husband Tom and I were advised to purchase an outboard motor before we left on our first journey to Alaska. I remember distinctly thinking, What the heck? What kind of a cruising boat has an outboard? Thats what oars are for, for pete sake! One thousand miles later I eagerly bought my first outboard. For the previous three months, one of us (usually my husband) fought currents and wind trying to row our inflatable from ship to shore or hither and yon while the other of us (guess who) tried trolling under oar power to catch fish. (Youve surely rowed an inflatable enough to know how much fun that is.) Most importantly, not having an outboard limited the range of exploring we could do. We couldnt run up an estuary or inlet in the inflatable because it was too far to row. We had to take the big boat, if even possible, or forgo the pleasure of poking about and exploring.

Many people object to the mess of gasoline on board, and they have a point, for gas can be a smelly hassle. Lifting the outboard off and on the skiff takes balance and teamwork, or a good pulley system, or both. But the freedom the outboard offers to explore, fish, crab, shrimp, and just get to shore easier, makes the small inconveniences worthwhile. An outboard can open new worlds to you.

As for the autopilotI know many sailboaters think an autopilot doesnt belong on a sailboat. Only wind vanes belong on sailboats, right? Wind vanes break. The torque on these vanes is tremendous, and no matter the vane, I guarantee you it will spend part of its time in sick bay. Wind vanes cannot be used when you have to motor, and horror of horror, one may just have to motor, particularly in the Inside Passage. My husband and I made our first trip to Alaska hand steering almost all the way thereand back. My first purchase when we returned after two years of exploring S.E. Alaska, was an autopilot. Months later, when our sturdy wind vane broke in the middle of the Pacific Ocean due to unrelenting trade winds and mountainous swells, I unpacked the little autopilot and shook my head as I looked at the pitifully small gadget and then at the enormous swells. Thisll never handle it, Tom, I wailed. Were gonna have to steer all the way back!

The autopilot performed like a champ. It was the best crew member imaginable! The little contraption steered us several thousand miles and didnt even eat us out of house and home.

An outboard and an autopilot. Dont leave home without them.

Why Venice is a Great Stop On a Cruise Vacation

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Cruises in and around Europe are increasingly popular and if sneak peaks at the 2008-2009 itineraries are any indication, cruise passengers will be getting more options. In fact, a new cruise line called Azamara is even promising not just more Europe, but new European ports of call.Which brings us to one of the oldest European ports, the city of Venice.

Venice is not like anywhere else on earth. It\’s not the only city that is laced with canals (Amsterdam has canals, too, so does Stockholm), and it\’s not the only city with an ancient past (Rome probably beats Venice in the historical department and Florence definitely edges her out in art). But there is something incredibly different and delightful about Venice.

You can\’t drive in Venice. Entrance in and out of the city is by boat (you take a water taxi from the airport), so arriving by cruise ship is close to the way the city was meant to be approached.

When you actually reach Venice, you\’ll have to get around by walking or boat. By far, the quickest, easiest, and least expensive way to go from point A to point B is to jump on the boat-bus, called a vaporetto. You buy tickets for it just like the bus. If you\’re a cruise passenger in town for the day, it may pay for you to buy a pass good for the whole day. Not only could it save you some lire, you don\’t have to hassle with buying tickets when you want to get a ride.

Water taxis are another option, but they\’re a bit more expensive. Even more expensive, but delightfully romantic and unique, are gondolas. Expect to fork out a lot of money for the experience, but, trust me, it will be an experience.

Most Venetians get around by foot, and you probably will, too. The city has all the twists and turns you\’d expect from an ancient town. Because of the network of canals, you will sometimes find yourself in the intriguing position of being able to see where you want to go but not be able to figure out how to get there. Relax, Venice has something interesting practically around every corner, so even if you get lost, you\’ll probably still do a lot of great sightseeing.

The biggest tourist spot in town is the Piazza San Marco where St. Mark\’s Cathedral is located. You can tour the cathedral and even climb the towers (not hard) to get a panoramic view of the square. Legend holds that the cathedral contains the grave of St. Mark, author of the Gospel according to St. Mark.

The square is full of pigeons (all of the time) and tourists (mostly in warmer months). Depending on when you travel, you may also see scaffolding or wooden walkways around the plaza. These aren\’t risers for a concert or show. They are walkways designed so that people could get across the square even when it floods, which it does often enough for the city to have built elevated walkways.

Nearby is the Doge\’s Palace. Doge (dough-jay) is the name the Venetians gave to their ruler back in the day when Venice was an independent nation. It\’s a sumptuous kind of place, fit for a monarch, but most tourists enjoy the lesser accommodations better. The Doge had so many enemies he annexed a prison to the palace which is reached by crossing the Bridge of Sighs. There is a self-guided tour of the prison but it is very important to stick to the pathways marked. You are perfectly free to wander around as you see fit, but the place is like a honeycomb and you can get lost.

Getting lost is a typical Venetian experience. The city is full of unmarked streets, twisted lanes, and narrow passageways.

One of Venice\’s favorite native sons was reputed to have been lost. Marco Polo lived in Venice and set out for China, where he spent 20 years. When he returned, he was vilified by Venetians who called him \”The Liar\” for making up stories. You can visit his home. It is located on a short cul-de-sac named \”The Liar\”The Liar.\”

Venice was always better known for commerce than art, but there are some artistic treasures. If you like eating what the locals do, you\’re going to try seafood and a dry sparkling wine called Prosecco. Of course, most tourists end up enjoying more generic Italian favorites here, too, such as cappuccino or espresso and rich gelato.

If you have time, take a vaporetto out to Lido island. It\’s an island that\’s just a short boat-bus ride from the main drag (the Grand Canal) and there is more relaxed (and less expensive) shopping and some beaches.

Another great thing to check out is Murano, an island famous for colorful hand-blown glass. You can buy Murano glassware all over Venice, including a special design known as mille-fiori (thousand-flowers). In Murano, you can watch artisans at work and get a much broader sampling of their products. You\’ll find Murano glass products in lots of stores.

Glass purchases from large stores can be shipped to you at home; most shopkeepers will be able to make such arrangements, at least for larger purchases.

Venice is a well-known city for tourists. It always has been, and cruise ships and package tours to Europe continue to feature it prominently. But Venice is also a very personal kind of city. Two tourists visiting the city on any given day can walk away with distinctly different impressions and experiences.

Alaska Glacier Cruise

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Alaska remains one of the most beautiful states in the USA. The beauty of its mountains, snow, and ocean brings in a significant number of tourists who ultimately make Alaska their vacation destination spot. In a way, Alaska has a romance about it that is missing from other vacation spots. Alaska is almost like another world compared to the rest of the United States, as it is so dissimilar than other vacation spots in the USA.

It makes perfect sense that an Alaska glacier cruise would see significant spikes in popularity among nature tourists. And this is for good reasons: getting up close and personal to the majestic sight of those amazing Alaska glaciers is what make an Alaska glacier cruise so popular.

In addition to this, the threat of Global Warming and the subsequent increase in temperature in Alaska has increased interest in the Alaska glacier cruise. These formations, which slowly grew over the course of millions of years, are now melting away into the ocean. This alone has fueled interest in seeing these amazing formations while it is still possible. In addition to this, Congresss approval of drilling in ANWR has also increased nature tourism in Alaska.

What makes an Alaska glacier cruise so unique is the fact that an Alaska glacier cruise allows you to see large parts of Alaska and its coastline that are not accessible in any other manner. Alaska very much remains as uncharted today as it was one hundred years ago. To give you a rough idea of how untouched Alaska is it supports thirty-thousand Grizzly bears when the bears are virtually completely extinct in the lower forty-eight states.

Depending on the length of the cruise, an Alaska glacier cruise could cost you anywhere between $200 and $1500. For more detailed information, contact the Alaska tourist bureau.

Know The Ins And Outs Of A Cruise Vacation Part 4 - Visit A Specialty Restaurant

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

In this series on knowing the ins and outs of taking a cruise for a vacation, I have already told you about a lot of things. The best part of cruising, there is still more, especially when it comes to enjoying life on board while at sea (or even at port).\r

\r On a side note, not really related to what I am about to discuss, one of the biggest fallacies about cruising is that you when you are in port, you must get off the ship. That just isn`t true. Believe me, many people I was around on a couple of my cruises thought you \”had\” to get off the ship. No you don`t if you really have no interest in where the shipped is docked.\r

\r In any event, I thought I`d throw that out there for many of you who may have thought that. Today I want to talk about the on board specialty restaurants. A lot of people have the same attitude that I use to have when it came to these speciality restaurants, and that is, why pay for food when your package includes your meals?\r

\r Some, not all, ships have what are called specialty restaurants. They serve certain foods exclusively, Italian, french, etc., and for a small per person fee you get a 5 to 7 course serving from their menus. Let me tell you why it is worth the extra money to go.\r

\r On our 3rd cruise a couple of years ago, my wife and I who normally treat ourselves to something special, usually a massage, or something along those lines, and we decided not do that and try out a specialty restaurant. On the ship we were on, they have a really nice Italian restaurant. At that time, for $25, you get a full 7 course meal, starting with a salad all the way up to dessert.\r

\r Let me tell you the food is incredible. It is 5 star quality food unlike what you will receive in the regular sit down dining or in the buffet. Now that is not to say that they are bad, but the cruise line puts a little extra into the specialty restaurant.\r

\r You get great service pretty much anywhere on a cruise ship, however at this particular Italian restaurant we were treated like royalty. The staff were extremely friendly, kind, courteous and attentive to all of our needs.\r

\r The menus vary from restaurant to restaurant and ship to ship. But rest assured the food is great, the service is excellence, the ambiance and the mood are a perfect setting if your are celebrating something special, like an anniversary or birthday.\r

\r Another wonderful part of this dining experience was the fact that you still were able to pick many items off the menu. For instance, lets say you couldn`t choose between the prime rib or the duck. No problem, order both of them. Will that be touch much food? Again, not a problem, they will cut down the portion size so you don`t feel like you are wasting a lot food. This came in real handy during dessert time, hint, hint.\r

\r If you are going on a cruise, and by now, you should be fairly excited about going on one, spend the extra $25 (per person cost) for you and your partner, you will definitely enjoy it.\r
