3 Questions Away From Diagnosis

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

There are many things that come into play when you talk about your risk factors for contracting mesothelioma. The most significant one is your history with asbestos. If you are experiencing any symptoms of mesothelioma and are curious as to whether or not you may have the disease, you should ask yourself a few brief questions.

Question one. Has my job ever required me to deal with asbestos? If you answered yes to the first question, there is no need to panic. Just because you have come in contact with asbestos means nothing. Many people come in contact with asbestos everyday and dont develop mesothelioma. Lets move on.

Question 2. How long did I work with asbestos? This question is very important. The development of mesothelioma is very dependent on the amount of time you were exposed to the asbestos.

Question 3. This question is a milestone question. It will help you distinguish whether what you have is mesothelioma or another condition. How long since your asbestos exposure have your symptoms developed?

You dont need to be exact. Just give an estimate. Now that youve answered these three questions, lets analyze your answers. If your answers are anywhere along the lines of the ones Im going to provide, I highly encourage you to visit your physician.

Question 1: Yes. Question 2: 1 year or more. Question 3: 30 years or more.

If you answered no to question one, you are likely experiencing symptoms of another condition. If you answered yes to two of the questions, including question one, it is advisable that you consult with your physician for further research. If you answered yes to all three, I highly advise that you seek immediate professional guidance. It is of crucial importance that this disease is diagnosed early. This will greatly increase your chances of recovery.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which affects the peritoneum of the human abdominal cavity. However, depending upon the location of the cancerous tumours (pleura or peritoneum) the symptoms vary.

There are different treatments available for the malignant peritoneal Mesothelioma, depending upon the state of its diagnosis. Physicians and researchers are constantly working to improve upon the existing treatments. There is no established method in determining the stage of the cancer so a TNM system is used.

Symptoms of the cancer include nausea and vomiting, weight loss, fever, bowel obstruction, loss of appetite and general pain in the stomach area. Thus, the three main forms of Mesothelioma are pleural, peritoneal and pericardial. Peritoneal affects the lining that guards the abdomen\’s insides, and which also gives a lubricating fluid that facilitates the smooth movement and functioning of the organs.

Peritoneal and, less commonly, Pericardial, are not as common as the pleural type, but just as deadly. Specific types of treatment for peritoneal include:

1-Surgery

2-Radiation Therapy

3-Chemotherapy

Peritoneal causes many deaths each year. Other symptoms may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anaemia, and fever.

A person with malignant peritoneal may be diagnosed because of complaints such as an abdominal lump or swelling, unexplained weight loss, fever, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, and constipation caused by bowel obstruction. Similarly, symptoms of peritoneal Mesothelioma, such as nausea, vomiting and appetite loss, may be seen in a number of abdominal and systemic conditions.

In around 1980 asbestos was determined to cause several life-threatening asbestos exposure-related diseases (asbestosis, lung cancer, pleural and peritoneal Mesothelioma). Those suffering from peritoneal Mesothelioma are mostly elderly men who worked amongst asbestos decades ago when workers were not protected from asbestos dust.

Causes and Symptoms of Esophageal Mesothelioma Cancer

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Esophageal mesothelioma cancer occurs in about 11,000 Americans per year. This accounts for less than 1% of all cancers. However, the incidence of esophageal cancer is increasing.

Cancer can develop in any part of the esophagus. It can spread to surrounding lymph nodes, the windpipe, and the large blood vessels in the chest, and other nearby organs. Treatment for esophageal mesothelioma cancer depends on a number of factors, including its exact location, size, extent, and type of cancer cells. It\’s also important to consider age and general health to develop a treatment plan to fit each patient\’s needs.

Causes of Esophageal Mesothelioma Cancer

Esophageal mesothelioma cancer occurs in the larynx (voice box) and oropharynx that is the part of the throat at the back of the mouth. There is sufficient to suggest that asbestos exposure is a cause of laryngeal cancer. There is insufficient evidence at this time to prove that asbestos is a cause of pharyngeal cancer.

Types of Esophageal Cancer

Squamous cell carcinomas occur in the cells that line the esophagus. Adenocarcinomas occur in the glandular tissue in the lower part of the esophagus and can spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of Esophageal Mesothelioma Cancer

Difficulty in swallowing, a feeling of fullness, pressure, or burning as food goes down the esophagus, a feeling of food getting stuck behind the breastbone.

Methods of Diagnosis

Esophagram (also called a barium swallow), is a series of x-rays of the esophagus. To prepare for this test, the patient drinks a barium solution. The barium, which shows up on x-rays, coats the inside of the esophagus for easier viewing. Esophagoscopy is a thin, flexible, lighted instrument (an endoscope) which is passed through the mouth and down the throat to the esophagus to view where the esophagus joins the stomach. Biopsy is a removal of a small amount of tissue through the endoscope to test for the presence of cancer.

Staging

The nature of the tumor is primarily evaluated by a CT scan of the chest. A CT scan reveals if the tumor has travelled into the trachea (windpipe) and large blood vessels or lymph nodes.

Esophageal ultrasound is similar to esophagoscopy, but with the addition of a built-in ultrasound devise.

PET scanning can also be used to evaluate esophageal cancer.

Treatment of Esophageal Mesothelioma Cancer

Treatment for esophageal cancer is contingent upon a number of factors, including its exact location, size, extent, and type of cancer cells. The doctor also considers the patient\’s age and general health to develop the best treatment plan.

Surgical resection (removal) of the tumor is the preferred treatment. Recently, surgeons have been using minimally invasive surgical techniques to remove esophageal cancers.

Chemotherapy and radiation are also frequently used, either in conjunction with surgery or independently.

Several additional options are available, including laser treatment, tumor stenting, or photodynamic therapy. For most patients, their ability to eat can be restored satisfactorily using these procedures.

A multidisciplinary team: gastroenterologist, surgeon, oncologist (cancer specialist), radiation oncologist, nurse, dietitian, and social worker join in the facilitation of patient treatment and care.

The Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which is being discovered more and more frequently in elderly men. The most common cause of mesothelioma is from asbestos exposure and affects the membrane of many of the most vital internal organs such as the lungs and heart. Mesothelioma is particularly hard to diagnose because it shows similar symptoms to many other more common diseases.

The most common form of mesothelioma is called pleural mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma accounts for 75% of all mesothelioma cases. Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs and has symptoms such as chest pain, coughing, breathing and swallowing difficulties, shortness of breath, wheezing and weight loss. These symptoms apply to many less serious diseases but anyone with signs of these symptoms are strongly advised to consult their doctor as soon as possible.

A less common form of mesothelioma is peritoneal mesothelioma and this form of the cancer affects the abdomen. The tissue lining the abdomen is called the peritoneum and this is what is affected. Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for 20% of all mesothelioma cases. The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are weight loss, abdominal pains, loss of appetite, weakness, nausea, and abdominal swelling. These symptoms become more and more severe as the cancer develops. To learn more about these symptoms go to http://www.1-mesothelioma.co.uk

Those who are exposed to asbestos or have been exposed have a risk of obtaining mesothelioma. It is important that mesothelioma is diagnosed in its early stages so that it can be treated quickly and aggressively. The earlier it is discovered, the more likely the treatment will be successful.

Types of Asbestos

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Most people do not know that asbestos is a natural substance. They assume it to be a substance made by man for commercial purposes. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral found in nature and mined by man to use for various purposes. The wonder of this mineral is that it is fire resistant, chemical resistant, highly strong, and completely flexible and has very low electrical conductivity. Due to the above reasons, asbestos is used for a variety of purposes in various industries. Some of them are:

Asbestos is widely used in the construction industry because of its fireproof quality.
\r Asbestos can be easily woven into cloth and is thus used to make fire poof clothing.
\r Asbestos is used to make gaskets and pipes.
\r It is used in the shipbuilding industry.
\r This popular substance was first used in 1828, in steam engines, as a lining material.
\r For many years, it was used to make floorings, brake linings and clutch facings in automobiles.
\r It is shocking to note that asbestos was used in making toothpaste and surgical incision thread too.

Broad classification of asbestos

There are two broad categories into which all types of asbestos can be classified. They are as follows:
\r a) Serpentine group:
\r This type of asbestos has a layered form and the fibers are curly. This is why it is called as \’serpentine\’. This group has just one member, called chrysolite. Basically, This is the most common type of asbestos.

b) Amphibole group
\r This is considered to be the most hazardous type of asbestos. It has straight fibers. Unlike the serpentine group, it has a chain like structure. Five kinds of asbestos are found in the amphibole group.

Sub classification of asbestos

There are six types of asbestos found on earth. Let us see about each of them below:

Chrysolite:
\r It is also popularly called as white asbestos, chrysolite is the most common type of asbestos. It belongs to the serpentine group. The construction industry makes vast use of this type of asbestos. Since this type of asbestos is widely used, the majority of the asbestos-related health problems globally are caused due to chrysolite. It is used in the following materials:
\r fire proofing materials,
\r insulation,
\r woven to form asbestos clothes,
\r cement pipes,
\r cement Sheets,
\r automobile brake shoes,
\r clutches,
\r disk pads,
\r textiles,
\r plastics,
\r paper,
\r rubber and
\r even in nuclear industry.

It has been proved by medical science that chrysolite also leads to various asbestos- related diseases, including mesothelioma. However, the asbestos industrialists are trying to hush up these studies. They keep claiming that it is not harmful. They do all that is possible in their power to stop the government from banning chrysolite. The result is that asbestos is still widely used in India, Canada, Africa, China and some other countries.

Though the developed countries have banned asbestos some years back, it is still found in many buildings and commercial products. If this is the case in developed countries, it is frightening to think of the future situation in the other countries.

Amosite:

This belongs to the amphibole category of asbestos. It has very stiff and Strong fibers. These fibers get easily air borne and are Very dangerous when inhaled through the nose or mouth. It is known as brown asbestos. It is mostly used for insulating purposes. Most of the countries have banned this amosite several decades ago itself. After chrysolite, this was the most popularly used type of asbestos.

Crocidolite:

This is a very rare type of asbestos belonging to the amphibole category. It is mostly used to reinforce plastics as it is highly strong. It is slightly blue in color. It is also used in thermal insulation.

The other three types of asbestos are not used to make any commercial products and thus, cause no harm.

How asbestos leads to mesothelioma?

When asbestos is mined and manufactured, a lot of asbestos dust and asbestos fibers are released into the atmosphere. Man can easily inhale this dust because it is light, invisible and airborne. Once it enters the body, either through nose or mouth, it travels throughout the body. The body organs like lungs, heart and abdomen have a lining called as mesothelium lining. When asbestos comes into contact with this lining, it starts behaving abnormally. It starts to divide rapidly and begins to outlive the other cells, leading to tumors in that area. This may also spread to the other parts of the body, leading to the terrible disease called as mesothelioma cancer. Thus, it would be in the best interest of all if this dangerous mineral, asbestos, were banned globally.

Early Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Common symptoms of Lung Cancer include: chronic cough, worsening breathlessness, weight loss, constant chest pain, and coughing up blood. Coughing up blood can be an early symptom. at this point the patient may still be curable. Smokers over the age of 40 should see a doctor immediately if blood is present when coughing.

Most people ignore the symptoms of lung cancer and are diagnosed to late. Over 50% of patients have progressed too far for treatment. Another lung disease that has similar symptoms is COPD chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also known as Smoker\’s Lung. Diagnosis of lung cancer can sometimes be missed because of the similarities of both diseases. Of patients that have COPD only one to two percent will develop cancer.

An x-ray showing a tumor is needed to positively diagnose Lung Cancer, unfortunately by the time a tumor is large enough to be seen on an x-ray it is usually too late. Biopsy is performed using a needle to obtain a sample for lab testing.

Small cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma and Adenocarcinoma are the three most common forms of lung cancer. It is very important for the correct diagnosis to be made early. The treatment of each type is different.

Small cell lung cancer is treated with chemotherapy. You must see an Oncologist for this treatment. Non-small cell cancer may be treated with radiotherapy. In about 20% of patients surgery may be the only course of action. Surgery will only be performed if there is a chance to fully remove the tumor.

With the advances in medicine that we are achieving everyday, Lung Cancer does not have a tragic end. About 10% of patients are cured of Lung Cancer the best way to increase the odds is through early detection.

Other forms of lung disease are also dangerous and should be watched for are… CONTINUE

Mesothelioma Lawyer - Upholding the Rights of People If Not Life

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Had it not been for the Mesothelioma lawyers the reign of terror unleashed by the widespread use of asbestos would have left the American society scarred just as asbestos leaves scarring marks in the lungs! Quite aptly, a Mesothelioma lawyer is regarded as the guardian of the Mesothelioma victims.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer; an ailment of the mesothelial cells that line the internal body organs. Typically associated with the exposure to asbestos, Mesothelioma is very rarely diagnosed at its early stage. Consequently, most cases are not detected before they reach malignancy.

As regards asbestos, man has been familiar with its heat and combustion resistant properties since the ancient times. People of the prehistoric civilizations were open to the use of asbestos. All the while, however, man was in the dark about the hazardous effects of asbestos. America saw the maximum use of asbestos during the two World Wars. Rampant use of asbestos was made in the shipping, construction and combat equipment manufacturing industries.

Once the dangers of asbestos exposure were recognized, legal regulations aimed at eliminating the use of asbestos (rather the abolition of asbestos) were introduced. Today, the US law does not prohibit the use of asbestos but attributes deadly consequences to its use. The legal regulations and warnings, however, failed to deter all employers and masked use of asbestos continues in certain fields.

This denial, on the part of the US employers, to abide by the asbestos regulations has given rise to hundreds of asbestos litigation claims. Some eminent lawyers and law-firms have come forward to safeguard the interests of the Mesothelioma. Every state of US now has its own Mesothelioma lawyers and law firms. The proceeding being quite complicated, people (who have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma or those who have been exposed to asbestos) approach lawyers and law-firms for help regarding their asbestos lawsuits.

These days, the Mesothelioma attorneys file class action lawsuits against those manufacturers who continue to use asbestos in their products and expose their employees to the probable health threats. (Class action lawsuit is a legal device that allows a person or persons to sue or be sued as the representative of a group of people; however, it also requires all of them to have a common interest). Class action lawsuits, upholding the liability of employers and seeking compensation for the harm caused to employees, have restored the peace of mind (even if it is only a bit) of the Mesothelioma victims and their near and dear ones.

Law-firms fielding competent Mesothelioma lawyers with proven records of accomplishment can pull off advantageous monetary settlement in the form of reimbursements for the Mesothelioma victims. Mesothelioma settlements, ranging from few hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars, depend on the lawyers skill in pinpointing the cause of asbestos exposure. Once this hurdle is crossed, the Mesothelioma lawyer investigates into the avenues of working out the smartest deal for the Mesothelioma litigation claim. In case of litigations being handled by experienced lawyers, manufacturers readily agree to the settlement proposals benefiting the Mesothelioma victim as well as the family members and the society at large.

Mesothelioma Diagnosis: An Introduction

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

A physician may suspect malignant mesothelioma in a patient who has symptoms suggesting this cancer and who reports a history of asbestos exposure. Careful medical examination may also reveal the presence of fluid in the pleural or abdominal cavity. Once malignant mesothelioma is suspected, a number of methods are available to help confirm the diagnosis.

Imaging methods, such as x-rays, CT scans, MRIs and PET scans, help determine the location, size and extent of the cancer, and specifically detect pleural or peritoneal thickening, fluid in the pleural or abdominal cavity, or nodules of cancer cells. However, a definitive diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma can only be made after the examination of cells from abnormal tissue.

A biopsy of abnormal tissue is performed to find out whether the cells in this tissue are cancerous or not. Such tissue can be removed through minimally invasive surgery. Fluid in the pleural or abdominal cavity may also contain cancer cells, and may also be removed for analysis. Cells from abnormal tissue or fluid are examined under the microscope, and can be identified as normal or cancerous. However, such examination does not necessarily confirm the type of cancer. Cells found in pleural mesotheliomas can resemble lung cancer cells, and cells found in peritoneal mesotheliomas can resemble ovarian cancer cells. To differentiate between these different forms of cancer, a method called immunohistochemistry is often used. This method detects proteins on the surface of cancer cells that are specific to certain types of cancers. A newer method called DNA microarray analysis examines the genes of cancer cells. Malignant mesothelioma cancer cells have different gene patterns from other cancer cells and from normal cells.

While no blood tests confirm a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma, there are certain blood abnormalities that suggest the presence of a cancer. Recent research suggests that elevated levels of a blood protein called osteopontin may help in the early detection of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Symptoms

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Mesothelioma is a disease caused by exposure to the asbestos dust. The most unfortunate aspect of this disease is that its symptoms do not appear soon enough or within a short enough time after exposure to the asbestos dust. This complicates matters because when the symptoms finally appear, in most cases, they are not associated with the disease. It takes very long time, sometimes even decades, for the symptoms to appear in form of obdurate cough, shortness of breath and chest pain. Initially, the unsuspecting patient and even his family physician associate these symptoms with common diseases like pneumonia. It is when the disease starts spreading to other organs of the body that the doctors apprehend and tend to trace the origin of the symptoms of this life-threatening condition.

The other symptoms that appear are weight loss, breathing difficulty, fever and difficulty in swallowing food. The voice pattern may also change and the cough may be accompanied by blood; there also may be swelling on the neck and face.

Other symptoms can be in the form of pain in the abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea, palpitation of the heart and vomiting. There may also be anemia and clotting of the blood. The best course of action is that a person should inform the doctor about any regular or inadvertent and short exposure to asbestos dust. Even acute symptoms of mesothelioma may be mistakenly associated with other diseases.

There are, however, some patients who do not show any important symptoms at all. Tumors may develop around the heart and can spread to other parts of the body. As the time passes and the disease grows older, the symptoms of all the three types of Mesotheliomapleural, peritoneal and pericardialstart appearing in more vigorous form. Even at this stage, the symptoms are likely to be confused with other diseases. It is important not to ignore symptoms that continue to persist over a long time. It is also necessary to know the symptoms of all the three forms of mesothelioma so that the disease can be identified in the nascent stage. The delay in identifying these symptoms may allow the disease to take firm roots in the system, and then it may become too late to treat it.
