Scrapbooking in Pleasanton California

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

If you are planning to visit northern California, plan to visit Pleasanton. Pleasanton is located about 50 miles from San Francisco. They have a population of just over 63,000 people.

In Pleasanton, youll find a great scrapbook store named California Stampin. They have 2500 square feet of scrapbook and stamp products. Make sure to bring the kids, as California Stampin has a kids play area. They have one of the largest selections of paper punches Ive ever seen, along with albums, walls of stickers and lots of how to books.

Youll also find a great selection of rubber stamps at California Stampin. For all of your journaling needs, youll find chalks and pens in various colors.

There are great photo opportunities available in Pleasanton. The Automobile Club writes about many old buildings and houses that provide a 19th century atmosphere. Shadow Cliffs East Bay Regional Park is on the outskirts of Pleasanton. Shadow Cliffs was formerly a gravel quarry. They offer an 80 acre lake, a waterslide, fishing and swimming.

Check the Alameda County Fairgrounds schedule to see what activities might be taking place during your stay in Pleasanton. The fairgrounds have one of the oldest racetracks, having been built in 1858.

Just an hour away is San Francisco, offering even more photo opportunities.

While in San Francisco I could spend days shopping both in the heart of the city and also at Fishermans Wharf, Pier 39, and Ghirardelli Square.

There is an Exploratorium - \”The museum of science, art and human perception which is a must see if you have children. This is one of the largest science museums anywhere.

Im sure if you ask store owner Suzanne Sez, she can offer even more suggestions of great places to visit both in and around Pleasanton.

Audrey Okaneko has been scrapbooking for several years. She can be reached at audreyoka@cox.net or visited at http://www.scrapping-made-simple.com

How To Host a Scrapbooking Party

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Hosting a scrapbooking party isn\’t as bad as it sounds. It is a fun choice for women to get together with the same hobby and share ideas and techniques. Hosting a party gives you extra perks like, discounts and prizes. Before you start handing out those invitations there are a few things you need to know.

First, What are the benefits of having a scrapbook party in your house. Women are more eager to attend these parties because they have a chance not only to catch up with one another, but to swap different designs and scrapbooking tools.

You will need to think of a roomy location to have your party. Each person will need plenty of room for their supplies and other items. Each person should bring their photos and memorabilia the want to exhibit. There are also some fundamental items they will need to bring along. Be sure to list them on the invitations.

Sharp scissors or shears

Small paper trimmer

Acid-free and lignin-free paper for mounting and

background

Acid-free pens for journaling

Adhesives for mounting photos and embellishments

Stickers for decorating

Now would be a good time for you to start thinking about the display of your page. Gather your pictures and cardstock and place them in clear baggies. Obtain accompaniments you wish to add.

The normal scrapbook party usually lasts two to three hours depending on how many first timers there are. Arrange to serve some light snacks and drinks. Place these away from the scrapbooking area to avoid any unwanted mishaps. Choose snacks that are easy to eat without a lot of mess.

Don\’t try to push yourself to complete a lot of pages during this time. Many scrapbookers only complete one to two pages at the party. This is why so many continue to have parties at different locations. You can establish a group that is willing to host parties at each others homes. A good time frame to get together again would be about once a month. This will enable everyone to establish more photos and scrapbooking items.

During your scrapbooking party is a great time to swap or borrow scrapbooking tools you do not use any more.

Scrapbook Stickers - Is Lignin Free Important?

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

If you want your scrapbooks and your photos to last, it is important to ensure that all items used in your albums, including scrapbook stickers and scrapbooking papers are lignin free.

Lignin is a natural component of wood. It is the binding agent that holds the cells in the wood together. During the paper-making process, trees are de-barked and then cut down into small chips. These chips are then converted to pulp. The method of pulping determines whether the final product will be lignin free or not.

Mechanical pulping is cheaper than chemical or Kraft pulping but results in the production of lower quality paper. This is because paper made by mechanical pulping still contains lignin and has a weak structure. The lignin will eventually cause the paper to break down and turn brown.

Paper made by chemical or Kraft pulping has had all the lignin and tree resins removed while still maintaining a strong structure. Lignin-free paper has a much longer lifespan and is not subject to that unattractive yellowing you often see in old newspapers.

When scrapbooking, keep in mind that lignin can migrate from one thing to another. You might want to think twice before sticking in that newspaper article or that birthday card. They might just lead to the destruction of all your hard work. If you must include something that is not lignin free, consider scanning it and printing a copy on lignin free paper for inclusive in your album. Or use a memorabilia pocket.

If you are unsure whether the scrapbook stickers you are buying are lignin free, ask the store owner. Most reputable scrapbooking companies ensure all their products are lignin free as they understand the need to preserve your memories. You can also look for the CK OK logo on the products. This guarantees the item is acid free and lignin free. But when in doubt, ask.

For a huge range of acid free and lignin free\r scrapbook stickers, please visit http://www.stickersnfun.com.\r Here you will also find 100s of free\r scrapbooking ideas. Make sure you sign up for the free\r newsletter so you dont miss a thing!

Scrapbook Photos - What To Do When Your Digital Photos Are Too Big For Your Scrapbook Page

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Hi Scrapbook Friend,

I received a great question today from one of our members. It\’s one I see from time-to-time, so I thought that I would pass on the digital scrapbook problem and answer here too for all to share in.

One of our scrapbook members wrote us and said that she was having a problem importing her pictures to fit the frame for the transparent photo frames on her scrapbook page.

Well, it was a great question and not an all too uncommon one either.

You see, as digital cameras continue to improve in both quality and max resolution, it\’s easy to have your images come into your computer or digital scrapbook page and cover the whole template up.

Normally, digital scrapbook pages are made at somewhere between 150 and 300 dpi (dots per inch). Making them more than 300 dpi usually just makes for a much larger file than needed as 300 is the max true capability of most color printers… especially the ones used in photo stores and by book publishers.

What that means is that if you have taken your images with a 3 or more mega-pixel camera, your images will be more than 300 dpi (effective on your page) and will be much larger than the pages you are creating.

This isn\’t a problem though; you just need to shrink them down by dragging the corners when the image is selected or use the cropping tool to remove the excess parts of the image so it will fit your frame opening.

A lot of times you\’ll want to do both!

What you would usually do is to first open the images you will be using on the page one at a time. You then shrink them down close to what they need to be, usually leaving them a bit larger… just in case. You then save them as a new file on the computer so that you keep the original in tact. If you ever need a larger image, you still have it that way.

Now, you open the scrapbook page and import the new smaller images to the page and do the final sizing and cropping.

In the rare instance that your image comes in smaller, such as when it\’s been taken with one of the low resolution children\’s digital cameras, you can enlarge it by up to about 25% in most cases without too much pixilation. By that I mean that as you make a digital image larger, the digital pixels are actually square and if you make it too large, the squares begin to show in the image. We call that pixilated.

If you need to make it larger than about 25%, then here\’s one thing you can do. Print a copy of the image on a photo quality printer or have one printed for you. Then, scan the image in at a very high resolution. My scanner lets me go up to 3200 pixels. Depending on how big you want to make it, you may only need to scan it at 800 or 1200.

What that does is makes the pixels in the new digital image denser and in effect makes the image larger than it really is for your digital scrapbook page.

It\’s the digital version of what they used to do to enlarge prints (and still do for really big prints) where they would make a large negative of the small image and then blow it up on the photo enlarger lens. You are just doing the equivalent digitally.

\’Hope this gives you some good ideas and a path to success for your digital scrapbook pages.

Happy Scrappin\’

Scrapbooking Store - Things to Get Started

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

We want to remember and keep for posterity important experiences and events of our lives, snapshots of moments and events we consider momentous in our lives and things which are of value to us and which we feel to be treasured for revisiting in future. The hobby of preserving all kinds of such memories bearing our personal touch and creative ideas be they journals, photographs, diaries or any other objects is called \’scrapbking\’.

What Is Scrapbooking?

The scrapbooks of earlier times used to be paper books on which we pasted clippings from newspapers. Now they are creatively organized albums of journals and photos chronologically documented for the coming generation to look at with wonder.

Stores for Scrapbooking

The scrapbooking activity requires certain supplies to create the album. Some of these scrapbooking stores are listed below:

i) Papers: The papers used for decorating the albums and mounting photos must be acid free. Presence of acid in the paper makes it brittle and prone to early damage. The photos will get discolored and faded easily by the acid in the paper. The scrapbooking paper must be free from lignin also as it causes early yellowing of the paper if it comes in contact with ultraviolet light. The processed paper for scrapbooking found in scrapbooking store is free from both acid and lignin.

ii) Plastic Sheets: Plastic sheets sized to fit the album pages protect them from dust, spills or fingerprints. Papers and page protectors are available for making the two standard sizes for scrapbooks, viz. the sizes 8.5\”x11\” and 12\”x12\”. The larger size can accommodate more information and photos and are therefore suitable as anniversary albums for weddings and the first birthday of the baby.

iii) Photo album binders: The photo albums come in formats like spiral bound, three ring, strap style and post bound. Spiral bound is good as small events album like say a particular excursion but not ideal for big albums due to certain drawbacks. New pages cannot be inserted for additional sets of photos. Also the color of the pages cannot be changed and pages cannot be covered with page protectors. Three ring binders provide these flexibilities. Album pages can be turned, removed or added easily with the provisions for changing colored papers and using page protectors. From consideration of storage, strap and post bound styles are better as the pages are arranged flat in the album making storage of the album easier.

iv) Glues: Only acid free glues or adhesives should be chosen. Double sided tape adhesives leave no glue on the photos and keep them clean. Glue sticks have the advantage that they take some time to dry up making it easier to move objects in albums before they get fixed on them. Since glues if not carefully used can spoil a photo, it is safer to use for albums photo splits which can be pulled off with ease if needed.

v) Embellishments: They add life to the album by decorating it with eye catching fun and flare. They come in the forms of stickers, die cuts, paper punches and paper dolls.\rScrapbooking Tools

These tools are required to develop a scrapbook. The basic tools are acid free pens, pencils, scissors, templates and stencils.

Starting a Scrapbooking Business? 4 Things You Need to Know

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Chances are that you fancy starting your own scrapbook business because it is already your hobby and passion. Luckily, scrapbooking is becoming a very popular pastime for lots of people, both young and old. Because of this demand, you should be able to tap into this lucrative market.

There are many stores selling craft products however there is always a place for niche sellers like you. If you decide to specialize purely in catering for the needs of scrapbookers, then you will need to find yourself a reliable wholesaler.

#1 The first thing to do is to find all the craft wholesalers you can and request price lists. The internet is the ideal place to look for wholesalers. There are many directories which list wholesale suppliers, some you will have to pay for whilst others are free.

#2 Once you have found all the suppliers you can, you will need to look at their terms and conditions such as minimum order, carriage costs and delivery times. Compare what each wholesaler has to offer and do not be afraid to bounce them off each other i.e. you could say \”XYZ craft wholesaler has a minimum order of $50, can you match that?\”

#3 When you receive your order, make sure that you check to see that it is complete and there are no damages. Some companies will only allow you a few days to check that there are no problems. If after that time you find there are missing items then you won\’t be able to complain.

#4 There are a number of ways that you can sell your goods, either at crafting exhibitions open to the general public or on the internet. eBay is a very popular way to sell goods as there are so many loyal customers shopping on eBay already. If you want to promote your eBay or web store the easiest way is via forums. Find craft forums on MSN, Yahoo or via your favourite search engine. You should get involved in discussions and give advice to people who are looking for inspiration. This is an ideal way to gain trust from your customers and become known as an expert. Be careful not to spam the forums i.e. don\’t let your first post be a link to your craft store. Instead you should introduce yourself and talk about your love of scrapbooking.

There is a lot of hard work involved in setting up any business and you should not go into this lightly. Make sure that you do a business plan, take notes of how much stock you will need to hold, work out your profits and decide if you are prepared for this. If this is the first business you have set up, find out if there are any business advisors in your area. Many advisors are provided free of charge by the government so you should make use of all the resources you can. Once you have your company set up and running then I\’m sure you will agree that it has been well worth it.

Finding it difficult to source wholesale scrapbooking supplies? Don\’t worry, SaleHoo is probably the best resource for finding wholesalers on the net.

An Inspiring Scrapbooking Idea

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to make memories come alive whenever you want them to. Scrapbooking is different from plain photos because it includes colors, pictures and journaling that will show and describe what you felt and how you went through those days, weeks, months and sometimes years of your life.

Scrapbooking takes time, commitment and a lot of co-ordination and because of this there is a lot of help available online, in books and even DVDs should you feel the need for any guidance. Here is a scrapbooking idea that should inspire you.

A New Baby

A new baby can be the perfect scrapbooking idea for which you should prepare before the baby arrives. In fact the best time to start collecting material will be right after you find out you are pregnant. During pregnancy your personality changes drastically along with your body, moods, eating habits and so on. You may want to record all this in a journal for putting in your scrapbook later. Take as many pictures as you can so you have enough to choose from when making your scrapbook.

Getting the Material Ready

You can get an album and alter its pages while saving some places for the photographs you will include in your scrapbook. A great scrapbooking idea is to start creating some of the pages ahead of time. For example, the font page, the colors you like, and the different designs you have in mind as well as sorting the available pictures in order to have them ready when you are ready to place them in your scrapbook.

There are readily available scrapbooking kits that will provide you with the material required to get started as well as other scrapbooking ideas that will come handy in time as you start enjoying creating a scrapbook.

Take a Class

There are scrapbooking classes available online where you can find assistance from trained consultants on how to make the first scrapbook for your new baby. A baby, especially the first one is extremely important in a couple\’s life and recording as much as possible of his or her life will be of utmost significance for you and eventually for your baby when he or she grows up. Not only will your child enjoy what you put together, he or she will greatly appreciate your efforts and thoughts for this huge but enjoyable project.

10 Ways to Embellish Your Scrapbooking Layouts

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

So, youve sat down to do your scrapbooking and now your wondering, How can I pep this layout up? Well, read on, because there are plenty of tips for you in this article.

An easy way to add some elegance or softness to your layout is to use paper tearing. Use a patterned paper to tear either diagonally, vertically in the middle or on either side about 1/3rd of a 12×12 sheet and adhere it on coordinating cardstock. E viola, there you are!

If you want to use embellishments such as die-cuts and they look a little plain to you, then use a darker shade of chalk to shade the edges to give it more depth. You can even use foam pads for a 3D look to adhere making it really stand out. The same can be done with punched out patterned paper or cardstock.

For adhering certain items that you do not wish to use glue with, such as vellum, you can use eyelets, brads, staples, safety pins, ribbon and oh so many more! Vellum really adds elegance and softness to your page.

Shaker boxes are really easy to make and gives your layout that special look. For this you might want to use a sturdy cardstock or chipboard to make the frame. Cut out a window and pick out some things you might want to put into the shaker box, such as beads, flakes or mini diecuts or punches. Use a piece of transparency for the cut out window, adhere. Then place foam tape around the inside edge of the window making sure there are no spaces in between. Then pour the filling into the upside down frame and adhere a patterned paper piece for the back of the shaker box. Adhere to layout and your done!

Heat embossing is another good way to make a layout elegant or special. You need an embossing heat tool, embossing powder and embossing clear ink. Stamp the pad with your stamp and stamp it on your layout. Immediately pour the powder onto the stamped area, then shake off excess. Heat with the embossing heat until the powder melts.

Dry embossing is also pretty easy. You need an embossing tool, stencils and a light box. Just place the cardstock on the lightbox, place stencil where you need it and trace around the shape of the stencil pushing down on the cardstock (not too hard). When youre done you can chalk the embossed area to make it stand out a little more.

If your journaling looks boring to you, why not use a tag to emphasize it some more. There are plenty of tag templates available as well as punches, but also free downloads to trace from the internet. Embellish the tag with ribbons, fibers, eyelets, etc. and your journaling will stand out.

Another beautiful and wonderful way to embellish a page is with quilling. Quilling looks difficult, but its really not! Even using a toothpick you can make pretty flowers or little animals and shapes that look like a million bucks! Use various thin long or short strips of cardstock, twist around a toothpick, then let go, shape and glue.

Now you have some advice on how to make your layout special. Have fun scrappin!

Mark Twain Was A Scrapbooking Addict

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Scrapbooking can frequently be viewed as a woman\’s hobby. There are however, many instances throughout the long history of this popular craft where men have played significant roles in developing the art that is loved by millions of hobbyists today. Unfortunately, the pull for men in scrapbooking was often the money, while there is plenty of evidence that some of them truly did enjoy scrapbooking as a hobby. Here are some of the finer achievements of men in scrapbooking history.

- In the mid 1800\’s, London based \”W. H. Rock\” began producing leather albums with pre-printed pages of flowers and birds. These albums became popular for scrapbooking hobbyists.

- In 1857, the production of \”carte-de-vista\” albums, containing photograph pockets, became popular.

- Mark Twain, best known for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn invented \”Mark Twain\’s Adhesive Scrapbook\” with pre-pasted pages. This idea was one of his most loved business adventures, possibly because it earned him over $50,000. Don\’t be too easily fooled, however, because Mark Twain enjoyed scrapbooking so much that he devoted his Sunday afternoon to keeping his scrapbooking albums up to date.

- Thomas Jefferson was an addicted scrapbooker. His albums included news clippings, drawings, and dried leaves. Men in the eighteenth century helped to produce \”Dutch Gilt\” or \”Dutch Flowered Papers\” (lithography or stenciling in Holland or Germany) using wood, metal, or blocks. Originally intended to line cupboards, these patterns quickly became a favorite in the scrapbooks of the day.

- In the 1870\’s companies began mass producing embossed paper for use in scrapbooking albums.

- While stickers, iron-on letters, buttons, rubber stamps, and metal accents are used today in scrapbooking, the Prang Company developed \”album cards\” for use in scrapbooks of the nineteenth century. These sets of ten cards were pictures of birds, flowers, or landscapes to be used in scrapbooks.

- Most nineteenth century scrapbooks have \”calling cards\” in them. These decorated cards were left by guests at the host\’s home. They eventually made their way into many scrapbooks because of the fond memories of wonderful parties and dances, not just by women, but, as you have already guessed, by men.

Kathy Williams loves scrapbooking and\r rubber stamping. She currently \r spends much of her time in her online rubber stamp store\r Rubber Stamping Fun

Creating A Scrapbooking Album - The Easy way

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Why has scrapbooking become such a popular pastime? One reason is that it combines the memorabilia you have collected from significant events, with the more intimate photographs of your loved ones. Creating a scrapbooking album is more personal than a traditional photo album because you can include anecdotes and family history to create a unique keepsake for your family. Finally, most women enjoy using their creativity to enhance and memorialize important milestones in their lives.

Where to Begin the Journey

The key to successful scrapbooking is to start where you are. Dont worry about the Christmas pictures from two years ago, instead focus on making scrapbooking a habit and part of your routine. Once you establish that every Wednesday night cropping routine, you will be amazed at how quickly to will begin to catch-up on past photos.

1. Pick a Theme: Sit down with your album and your most recently developed or downloaded pictures. Your first step will be to decide on a theme for your pictures. It may be self-evident like Dads Birthday or Arizona Vacation. If not, try to focus on the event, location, or season. It can be non-specific such as, Fall Family Fun or Baby Love.

2. Choose a Background: I recommend beginners use a pre-made kit that includes pre-cut paper, embellishments and some suggestions for layout. Soon enough you will be comfortably creating your own designs, but its always good to have a starting point. Its also better to work on color than a white background, for aesthetic appeal.

3. Pick Your Pics: When deciding how many, and which, pictures to use on a page, consider the size and quality of the image. You may choose to keep a special image full size as the focal point of the page, or to make several similar images different sizes of the same shape.

4. Embellish: Decide if you want to journal a few comments, or merely enhance the photo with letters, stickers or relevant quotes. You will find numerous sources that will give you ideas. This is where you get creative and let loose!

Discovering Your Muse

Scrapbookers are incredibly diverse in their likes, dislikes, abilities and strengths. Try some of these methods to help you uncover your hidden talents and inspirations.

Some scrappers claim their muse is in the materials. So in addition to browsing through websites and catalogs, hit the local dollar store and see what catches your eyes. Once you have the perspective of a scrapbooker, ordinary items like ribbons, jewelry, cords and buckles look like treasures.

If writing is the right thing for you, consider journaling. This entails more than just listing dates, names, and birth dates. You may choose to record a funny story, a favorite poem, or to explain why a certain photograph is so significant. The difference is a picture of Mary blowing out the candles on her birthday cake versus that same picture accompanied by the story of how Marys mom accidentally broiled the first cake, and had to run out and buy this store-bought version at the last minute.

If you have an artistic flair for drawing, you may choose to add swirls, doodle or cartoons for your commentary. This album will be an expression of you, so dont be afraid to make it personal. In fact, dont let fear get in your way at all. Just give it a try. Once you have done a page or two, scrapbooking will be effortless and fun. Creating a scrapbooking album is a great way to relax with friends, preserve family history and create something that is uniquely yours.
