Now that you have the audiences attention, your work is over. Now, all you have to do is deliver the content--- right? Definitely WRONG!!! Now that you have the audiences attention focused on you for the beginning of the presentation, youll find that their minds will wander if feed a straight diet of content information and statistics. Even though they are similar in nature, during the body of the [presentation you have to introduce grabs. How are grabs different from hooks? In my opinion, hooks and grabs are essentially the same. The difference comes with the intensity of the opening hook. The opening hook is the device that will first attract the audiences attention to listen to your presentation. To maintain audience interest throughout the presentation, you have to further peak their interest. What makes the grabs timely is they are placed at specific points in your message. Now, the audience has some new and interesting information besides the basic content. Grabs can include:
Stories make them personal
Examples make them current
Analogies make them real world
Statistics make them accurate
Audience Interaction make it effective
Questions make them thought provoking
Repetition use to reinforce, use to reinforce, use to reinforce
Shock make it lively
Suspense make it engaging
Special Effects make them in PowerPoint
If youre going to use an analogy, try to make it as real world as possible. This way, the audience can transfer the benefits of the experience to the content. Some real world analogies would include references to household appliances, food, travel, transportation or entertainment.
Remember grabs should directly relate to the topic but can be unrelated to whats currently being discussed and come at any time or from anywhere. These types of grabs put life back into the audience and some zing in the presentation. The next time you feel that your presentation is on a downward spiral, throw in a grab during the message. Youll ALL be glad you did.
