Security is not a new concern at all. People have built walls around their homes since the birth of time. A residential security system is the new city walls for modern time.

There was a time when large walls were considered the highest form of residential security. The technological revolution has changed how we view a home security system these days. What does a residential security system do? It provides security to the residents of the home and for the property itself. This may seem like a simple answer, but the idea of security is a rather complex one today. There are some people that might consider land mines and claymore mines as an ideal security system, but the more common idea is to go back to the idea of walls.

The walls of the modern residential security system are electronic walls. Some advertisements for security systems illustrate this point by showing a graphic of electronic symbols flowing over every inch of the home creating a wall of sorts. This visual representation of home security is not far off the mark. It is the advent of electrical technology in the security field that has created the basic residential security system.

The object is to protect the residents from any harm. This harm could come from intruders and the security system warns of their approach and deters them with lights and alarms. It also is usually connected to a central monitoring station where the alarm can be passed on to appropriate law enforcement agencies. The ideal residential security system can be easily activated and deactivated by family members to prevent false alarms and allow access of welcomed guests.

Physical intrusion is not the only threat to the home. Fire detection is another factor in the ideal residential security system. Smoke detectors are a standard part of this protection, but by connecting them to an alarm system and hence to the remote monitoring station, fires can be detected even when no one is present in the home.

The ideal residential security system provides peace of mine to the homeowner and his family. It should be comprehensive and not easily defeated by an intruder. It should be connected to remote monitoring to provide back up support when needed. It should consider protection of physical property as well as people within the home. It should also be reasonable in cost and reputable in results. What does a residential security system do? It may very well, one day, save your life or protect those in your family that depend on you.
